Opinion Polls - Are they Scientific?

I recently went for a conclave organized at the Chennai office of The Hindu on the subject of Scientific things behind the opinion polls. The speaker, Director of Chennai Mathematical Institute, elaborately confused the possibility of Statistics serving him as scientific tool. But he also confessed that he did not had necessary funds to do things in a Scientific manner for that will require surveying 21lakh samples. I told him that the opinion poll will not be considered scientific even if he did it with 21lakh as sample size for the reason the subject of Statistics itself is a mutant mathematics killing the spirit of science in all the researches happening now in India. The following link (add htt and www suitably) gives the report of the proceeding

thehinducentre.com/events/article5750052.ece

I do not find anything as Scientific in the explanation given by him both in his speech and in his article. But even N.Ram did not allowed me to pose questions asking the scientific veracity of statistical tools. Will the forum take this question?
