Will they realize our traditional Indian outfit is equally beautiful?

100 yrs from now, will Indian attire survive?

I notice you pin-point on girls/women. But how/why has it been OK for men and boys to forget Indian culture (myself included) ?

Oh, yeah! That's correct. It would be nice for men to revive our traditional clothing too... both men and women can wear our traditional attire so it doesn't die. :)

Dear JR,

For a westerner the saree is a fancy outfit to be worn for some functions..I am pretty sure hardly any white girl wears a saree to work.

And these 2 white females in the pic are in India..

When I had gone to an ashram in India once..the neighbouring room was occupied by girls from Kazhakstan.

They bought sarees and came over to my room and asked my mum and I to tie it for them.

It was just fun for them.

They quickly undressed into the bare amounts of clothing to get their saree tied when even my brother was in my room and my bro felt a bit shy and left the room so that they girls can have some privacy!LOL

(My bro was planning to leave the room before we started tying but the Kazhak girls started undressing even before he could leave..then he quickly went out!)

One can wear dhoties if sufficicient precautions are taken against mishaps such as slipping at the waist and held together by belts etc. . It might be a good idea to have

pre stitched dhoties with elastic bands leading to ease in wearing .

even saris are available with pre stiched pleats to aid easy wearing . Dhoties also it should be possible. I do not know if it can be worn to work.

Modi govt can issue a directive to all MNCs to make this dress mandatory at least on friday when casual wear is encouraged in MNCs

Some retd judges faced the humiliation at one of the well known clubs in chennai when they were denied entry due to their dhoti-shirt dress

It caused a huge uproar.

The club stuck to its guns.lol

Out here Friday is a day where employees wear traditional clothes..

I too wear Salwar Kameez on Fridays..other days I wear western outfits.

Why modi govt to issue a directive? Those intelligent souls can do it on their own if they value their worth. They turn up in dandiya in all traditional glory. At least some listened to modi and bought khadi goods. Khadi sales doubled. One khadi day by MNC is appropriate. Traditional dresses can be in khadi too.

There has never been a static "tradition" in Indian dress. Googling will tell that our own dress codes have been changing considerably and the present day Saree/Veshti is not any representative of Indian tradition. Our dresses suited the climate and living styles of people in different parts of the country. But to day both men and women have been employed in what may be called "western-style" employments and their lifestyle is so very different from those old days of traditional living. Hence, I feel there is nothing wrong in our young men and women switching over to the western style dresses, if they feel comfortable in those.

Is it necessary to conserve something called "our traditional attire" which is just one or two centuries old, or is it more important that our younger generations find suitable employment?

This is a very subjective topic; what one wears depends on the way they feel about themselves, about their confidence level of their own bodies, their sexuality, their interest in "fitting in or standing out" etc. To say that all Indian girls are resorting to western clothes is too broad. Many wear it for comfort, for convenience and others do it because its easier to fit in and maintain a level of being current and in t he moment.
The japanese too have very traditional attire but do you see them strutting around in that? Imagine a girl in a kumono or a saree running to catch a bus or train? Not happening!

But having said all this as a male i do argue and having lived in 8 countries in NA EU and Asia the saree is THE most exotic erotic and majestic of outfits on a woman when worn in its correct form. They key is to have a simply excellent shape and figure ; something very hard to maintain and in the south like TN not even a daily goal. And the saree does NOT lie; it will expose the naked truth especially in the mid section and rear. Yet when worn by Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone or others it is not only desired by choice (by them) but makes the saree come to life. It transforms from merely clothing to an exquisite piece of jewelry and personality accessory.

As for males i think its a farce that people mm Singh and Namo walk around in dhobiwala type outfits for international meetings. Wear a good well fitted suit and cone in style. Do they walk around with old slates and chalk or parchment paper n ink???? No! They want the latest ipads, notes etc to take notes or the bullet proof bmw or merceded to move them around. Why not use a gadha or an elephant for that too to follow "parambhara"???

This whole country is filled with double standards and hypocrisy ; but i am proud that the youth will NOT stand for that and do,act, say and wear what makes them happy and if not they change! In fact their country is not India or China or US but Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc

Its about time we all took notice Facebook is the SECOND most populous country in the world! And in that country there are no boundaries, castes, religion or parambara. It is free to choose what it wants. And it speaks volumes daily...800million of them use it per day....its a great astrologer to predict the future if we choose to simply listen observe and perhaps admire some of the positive revelations of the youth!

In oath taking of ministers in delhi today , most getting sworn in were in indian attire [no pants and shirts]. all 22 except two took oath in hindi[two were from w.bengal

and AP]

I did write a post after my India trip last year, about changing norms in dressing in India. My daughter had to help her Delhi cousin in draping the sari for the first time.

But every occasion demands a particular dress. I guess the t-shirt and jeans for casual or office wear may be easy to maintain than a sari. Yes it is the change, and sometimes for people of earlier generation, it is nostalgic to see things change.

Designs and fashions is big business and money changes all perceptions.

Wonderful observation.

it is not an issue of right or wrong.

we should not be ashamed of anything indian

it is a mindset.

after modi always talking in hindi . more are talking in hindi and those comfortable in hindi than english do not feel they are inferior to those communicating in english.

agreed more could be employed but that has nothing to do with the subject of the thread - indian attire and our youth being comfortable wearing it

We should not be ashamed, before some one else makes us feel ashamed, we should change the situation.
40 years ago in a Manchester England, I met this TB gentleman. I had been in town and used to attend the Sunday Temple Gathering. All the attendees were non-tamilians, so enquiring around I found this TB family very close to the temple, I got their Telephone number and got myself invited to their house talking in Tamil (ulterior motive - food).
The gentleman informed me that he does not go to the Temple as all speak in Hindi, but his wife visits on occasions.
So he did not want to ashamed, so he avoided contacts.

Here( IN USA) on Temple or Indian function days we wear Indian attire (kurta), I do stop to go shopping, but I would not wear it as a business dress.

biker sunderji

our ladies know what is best for them in terms of attire. recently at the launch day broadcast of mangalyan , most of the working ladies ISRO at the computer

terminals were in sarees. this explodes the myth that only western attire are suitable for work . many opt for salwar kameezes atleast for friday dressing at MNCs.

those in suits are because of dress codes of MNCs . a frown from Modi govt will change them in no time.If they want to work in india with cheap indian work force, they

should not distort our culture , our sartorial preferance or keep them upto 11 at night to service some lazy westerner in europe or the US.Their shit work culture and

practices overworking and exploiting our workforce is distorting our family lives and damaging lives of our youngsters. what thay do in india they would not do in either

in singapore with better labour regulations and better wages or in australia where whites raise their hands when anything unreasonable these MNCs do.

Even in US our indian companies were hauled to courts for bad payments denying fair minimum wages to people of indian origin in silicon valley.

We -both men and women need not accept western attire if they work for foreign companies. It is their personal choice. How many ladies working in govt offices and

PSUs wear western attire. In fact if they turn up in these , they would be told not to spoil the work culture and atmosphere.

there should be pride in ourself ,no self criticism unduly bothering about hypocricy or double standards. India has changed . Others have to come to us and adjust to

our ways incase they want our business . We will talk in our language , they can bring interpreters incase they want our business.

facebook ,google etc are in hindi and regional languages to cater to us. we will set our own rules and live by them

some foreign exposed men can continue with their outdated posts on indian hypocricy and the like. best to ignore them

Frankly speaking I am the least bothered what others wear.Who cares!

No one is born with clothes.

In fact nudity is natural. I think as humans evolved clothes were designed for protection from cold and heat and nothing more.

Later it became a status and identification symbol.

So in the real sense clothes cover even our real nature.

Nudity has been given a bad name.

Its time Nudity is given its a respect and regain its lost status.

The human body is one the best designed piece of art..especially when you cut it open.

God is such a perfect artist.

Come on Renu! You are the one who like to shop for new attires whenever you have a trip!

You are supporting birth dress whereas I wish mAmAs to fight against compulsory topless dress in Kerala temples!

Dear Renu! We have to dress for the occasion. Wearing a costly saree, cotton saree, chudidar, jeans and shirt should be

proper for the occasion. For example, a lady will be crazy to wear costly dress while going for a mourning!

Sorry to divert from the topic!

When I think of mourning in tambrahm families, I am reminded of women with shabby dress, without even having a bath

in the morning (since they have to bathe after returning home!) I always go in a simple neat dress, after morning bath.

Some of my friends ask me why I do so!

P.S: There was one mAmi travelling in a bus in the next row, who told her husband that she need not have a head bath

after returning home because she did NOT touch any member in the house where they went for a mourning!

Yes RR ji...that is becos the rest of the world is still clad.

Now I have taken a different stance in life..I am going to admire everyone..fat or thin..topless temple going mAmas or topless anyone for the matter.

The world needs to be admired.
