Pavithram

Rg Vedam: 9.73.3 ( Pavithravantha: pari- - - )
****************************************************
Pavithravantha: means "with the potential for purification ".

(1) The word Pavithram comes from the root "Poo " .
Poo is synanomous with pavathE , PooyathE , PoonAthi
meaning to cleanse , purify .Pootha means white Kusa grass
as well as an epithet for VishNu . PavamAna means wind
and also a sacred fire ( Gaarhapathya) .The Vedic usage of
"pavi" is the tire of a wheel .

(2) Thus there are several approaches one can take in
extracting the meaning of "Pavithram " standing for
sacred , holy , sanctified or two blades of Kusa grass
used for purification during Vedic ceremonies . Pavithra
PaaNi is One who hold Kusa grass in the hand .

(3) Pavithram is also the sacred thread worn by members
of three VarNAs : "Yaj~nOpavetham Paramam Pavithram
PrajApathE : yath sahajam purasthAth" etc .

(4) Pava: means purification and wind ; Pavana/Paavana means pure.

(5) In AzhwAr -AchArya SambhAvanA Manthrams , one comes across
" Pavithram" again . " PavithrENa " also appears in the second line :

" CharaNam Pavithram vithatham purANam yEna poothastarathy dhushkruthAni

tEna PavithrENa suddhEna poothA: athi pApmAnamarAthim tarEma "

---- ---- ---- Manthram I

(Meaning) : The Lord who has the roopam of a wheel of a chariot and who
leads us to utthama gathy protects us after purifying us. He protects us
( thrANam) from powerful weapons of the enemies like Vajram. He has
no birth (anAdhi & timeless). He is present in newly consecrated Chakrams
and He is eulogized by Vedams and other PramANams. He is celebrated amongst
the Tatthva Jn~Anis and is a friend of them . He has vyApthi across the
world . Those who carry His mark on the right upper arm become sanctified
and get rid of their accumulated sins.Moksha VirOdhis are chased away by
this Sudarsanar and we get closer to Lord Sriman NaarAyaNa ,
whose sankalpa sakthi is the Purifying Sudarsanar . May we jump over all
ills with Sudarsanar's blessings !

There is a saying Kusagra Buddhi which means keen intelligence. People somehow have connected this grass kusa with mind or intellect. So our statement that Pavithram of kusa grass has a direct application for mental purity stands supported and strengthened. Further, Lord Subrahmanya, the second born of Siva, is represented by a serpent which symbolizes wisdom. Puranas say that he was born in a Saravana or forest of kusa grass. This fact is highly significant and emphasizes that eventually supports this statement.

The Pavithram made for people performing inauspicious rites and ceremonies, as for instance, the funeral rites for the dead, consists of only one blade of the kusa grass. whereas that made for people performing auspicious ceremonies like the marriage ceremonies consists of two blades. The ceremonies neither auspicious nor inauspicious but performed with spiritual significance as for example the Tarpanam i.e. oblations of water and Sesamum offered to the Pitris or manes on new-moon days require the wearing of Pavithram of kusa grass made of three blades. The number of blades has also its significance. One blade signifies the mental force of one, while two blades signify the force of two i.e. the husband and the wife. The three blades were intended to signify the mental force of the preceptor or some one else added to those of the husband and wife.

Pavithram ( Dharbai or Gold or Silver)
has to be worn on the ring finger , Right
hand .In our hands , thumb represents Vaayu ,
Indes finger , the Sky , Middle , the element of
Fire , the Ring finger , the appu or Water and
the small finger , Pruthvee tattvam .

The significance of Water is celebrated
in Mantra Pushpam and Udhaka Saanthi
Mantrams . That is the significance of
the Ring Finger for wearing Pavithram .

Once the cleansing arising from
the observance of Vaidhika Karma
by one wearing Pavithram made of
Kusa grass is over , the pavithram has to be
discarded .

The reason why the Pavithram is discarded ( kept over the ear for convinence) is that the Pavithram should not get wet ( it will make a short circuit to the eddy currents flowing in it).

During Achamaneeyam time ,
it has to be held over the right ear .

For Vaidhika KarmAs , Only Pavithram
made of Dharbham is to be used .Gold Pavithram with just a Thousand year history
going back to Taantric worship in Kerala
has no place in Vaidhika KarmAs .

In Kerala , the goldsmith makes
these Pavithram rings with 3 lines representing
the three Naadis ( Ida , Pingala and Sushumna) ,
the knot ( Trimoorthys in their tradition)
and the 7 dots on both sides of the knot
represnting the Saptha rishis ( Mareechee ,
Vasishta , Ankeeras , Athri , Pulasthya ,
Pulakan and Krithi) . The pattern is copied
by Tamil Naadu Jewelers now . Ladies also
use them now as a jewelery . Although the ladies
wear them as Jewelery , they are expected to remove
it during their Bahishtai time . The Goldsmith who
makes it has to observe certain niyamams
duringthe time of making these gold pavithrams .

Gold Pavithram can be worn on the hand of the male
at all times since it has no Vaidhika significance and
sanctifying power like Kusaa grass pavithram .
