People as a hobby collect items -suvenirs, stamps, photos ,autographs of persons, coins . these collections which are valuable at one point of time get

accumulated. one starts what to do with them at a particular stage in life

I have found many wondering what to do with these items

some look for a suitable agency ,individuals who would have them and cherish them

Because of my children I got hooked to collecting autographs of well known people-cricket players, filmstars . one comes across

I ended up with autographs of shivaji ganesan who was on madurai-chennai flight which I was taking some years back . I got those of cricketer srinath on

bangalore -mysore shatabdi. most recently I had gone to saravana bhavan on 15th august with my children for lunch . My daughter recognised ex RBI governor

with his wife at another table. my daughter an ex RBI intern thought she should get his autograph, we fished out an old 100 Re note with his printed signature

and got his autograph on it again in ink with date 15th aug 2014 . so I have a hundred rupee note with 2 signatures of RBI governor.

he joined out tabled and blessed my children . it must have been an unusual experience for him . someone taking autograph of a finance man and thinking he is a

celebrity.lol. that shows how india has changed

my brother in law had a huge music collection done over 50 years with old tapes played on big vintage players, cassettes, cds all carnatic music.

he gave to smt sowmya who was collecting these items along with a few others. she sent a car with driver to pick the items from his house in chennai with

instructions to the driver to fall at his feet and take his blessings before accepting these items. My brother in law was stunned and got very emotional over the

gesture of the driver and the singer.

photos -my approach is to scan all the old photos and put them into computer . my daughters marriage was celebrated in bangalore . The albums which were got

were very large and heavy and got much after the wedding . the albums made a round of 5 houses of close family in chennai hosur district and chennai and finally

got misplaced without reaching delhi , my home. recently some relative vacating his home in south found it and wanted to return it . I had been consoling my daughter

saying you have the man why worry about photos.I told my daughter to pick it up -five years after marriage. she said she had no time to pick up and take it to

singapore.

now I have to pick it up and store it until daughter picks it up

I have a lot of sovenirs picked up during foreign trips . My most prized possession of photos on top of alps of self and wife in swiss village attire complete with

hats/cap and another in argentina zoo with tiger in arms of my wife. wow . probably the animal was drugged . in buenos aires they have an open zoo . one could

get into cage

Well girls have a different collections..

When I was a kid..I had a good collection of dolls..then as I become older it was a collection of pencil cases..then a collection of sugar candy wrapers..as a teen it was a collection of shoes..as a young adult a good collection of admirers!LOL

Then as I aged it was a collection of books..I guess when I am much older it would be a collection of memories to leave behind.

Moral of the story: No matter what you collect..you would have to leave it behind!LOL

No Renuka that should not be the moral of the story. You also need to take something. Leave some and take some is the idea.

Do you see yourself there? Enjoy:

when I was small:

I'd put my hands inside my dad's shirt, button up and tell people I have no hands.

Would restart the video game whenever I knew I was going to lose.

Had that one pen with four color refills loaded together and tried to push all the buttons at once.

Waited hiding behind the door to scare someone, but came out disappointed when they were taking too long to come.

Faked being asleep so i would be carried to the bed by my dad,

Used think that the moon followed our car

Tried to balance the switch between on and off.

Watching two drops of rain roll down the window and imagining a race between the two.

The only thing i had to take care of was my school bag

Swallowed an orange seed and was scared to death that the tree was going to grow in my tummy

Closed the fridge door very slowly to see when the light went off.

Walked into a room forgot what i wanted, walked out and then remembered and when asked what was happening answered "nothing" sheepishly.

I finally found the answer to the most asked question in my childhood "what do you want to become when you grow up?"

A child again.

Please don't think I am criticizing or pointing out mistake. I think you are referring carnatic vocalist Sowmya. She was an IIT student. I presume she has not visited but sent the driver only to collect.

It is a normal practice to see upcoming and middle level musicians will fall at the feet of senior musicians.

Now, the point is that the CDs are for Sowmya and others. I don't know why she asked the driver to fall at your brother in law's feet. Is he also a musician?

If he is not a musician, what is the purpose of it. It is rather strange to see a driver seeking the blessings for somebody else. The role of a driver to pick up and drop and in come cases collection of materials. I feel Sowmya probably thinks such an act will transfer the blessings from the driver to her?

Is it not overacting?

chandruji

the Collection of music was for some archives that she and along with other music vidwans are setting up . it was not for herself. secondly , my brother in law was a

finance director of a govt company before retirement ,was 80+ at the time of the incident and only a lover of music . He did not know the lady personally . The driver had been told that he is meeting a very senior person

who was donating his lifetime collection of music . before taking this danam he should take his blessings and collect the items.

I appreciate Smt. Sowmya for her instruction to the driver, who might not have known the custom of

getting blessings from an elderly person, while receiving something equivalent to a treasure!

Dear Chandru ji,

I wonder why you are surprised with the act of falling on the feet.

I feel in India almost everyone falls on people's feet for no apparent valid reason!LOL

I see in Dance India Dance TV show kids fall on feet of all actors and actresses and also the judges..at times I feel they carry it a bit too far.

Dear Sri Krish,

Your post has rekindled my memories. My father had a good collection of Stamps, Coins, Nesle pictures and he kept on collecting these for years.

I started collecting Autographs from my College days. Among the autographs collected,I have the Autographs of G V Mavlankar (first Speaker of Parliament), Sir C P Ramaswamy Iyer, Sir T. Vijayaraghavacharyar (Diwans), Swami Prabhavananda, Swami Chinmayananda (Religious Gurus), Vijay Merchant (Cricketer) and national leaders Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and J P Narayan. To get Nehruji's autograph I sent a caricature of him drawn by me along with a letter requesting for his autograph. To my pleasant surprise within a week I got back the Caricature and his autograph. When I was young I attended the public meetings of leaders of that time regularly. On one such occasion I went to J P Narayan's meeting well prepared with a photograph of his to get his autograph. Though he declined politely to sign on papers and books shown to him, he signed on the photograph shown by me and asked me how I got the photo of his with his wife Smt Prabhavati Devi.
I regret that I did not attempt to get the autograph of Gandhiji, for which he collected just Re.1/= for his "Harjan Fund".
At one time I had a good collection of cinema notices, and match-box labels , but they were destroyed by white ants, when I had left the box in the attic.

If we have the will,we can make life interesting, where ever we live.

Regards,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

As a small boy I had the habit of collecting the match box labels(Theepetti padam) over which pictures of animals, flowers, different types of vehicles etc.would be printed. Then, the value I attached to them was much more than the value I attach to the currency notes now.
