Paternity Leave for men In India

Indeed, men in India should be given three months paternity leave. The reason is simple: fathers too need to be involved in the upbringing of an infant. And they have been deprived of this opportunity for far too long. After all, parenting is not exclusively a mother's domain.

A child needs both parents while growing up. The presence of a father during childbirth can sensitize him towards the special needs of a baby. He will learn to mother the child just like a working mother learns to father a child. Moreover, paternity leave will mean men will be with their partners during childbirth.

Should men in India get three months paternity leave? - Times Of India

Women in India have maternity rights under the Maternity Act of 1961 as long as they have been employed by an employer for at least 160 days of the preceding 12 months. This law, which was passed by the Central Government of India, applies to the whole of the country and covers every industry, including industrial, agricultural, governmental and commercial. It applies to any woman employed in India for payment in any workplace. A woman employed in India must notify her employer in writing of her pregnancy and the expected date of birth, as well as the actual date of birth.

Some companies allow a few days leave out of accumulated earned leave for men.

What is your opinion on this issue?

Hi Shri PJ, in theory, yes, men should get paternity leave like in some western countries. But I don't think our Indian men are equal to the task of mothering a baby. Our culture kind of frowns upon men changing nappies, giving feeds late at night, etc. So the whole idea of paternity leave will be lost, and in some cases the father may be more of a hindrance than a help.
Of course, with changing urban values, perhaps the idea of paternity leave is valid in the metropolises, but first of all Indian males have to be educated to do their fair share of the "dirty" work. Otherwise this doesn't make sense.

Yes, you are right, with changing urban values. men should have some cushion time to cope up with additional member in the family; now a ays, both husband and wife go for work, parents/ in laws might not be staying with them, they nee this break absolutely necessary.
