Posting in Internet Forums - They are like Newspaper Articles

There was a discussion in one of the threads about a member adding the condition of In my Opinion (IMO). This along with In my humble opinion (IMHO) was common in the internet posting. This has become less common now because Internet has become more mature and the surfers know more about the net.

However since this had come up I thought I would write an article about this.

News papers and Journals employ reporters and journalists. Reporters are the ones who report any event taking place. Journalists write articles. These articles are based on the opinion and interpretation of the author. The journalist may have done a lot of research. But he/she does not quote these in newspaper articles.

The posts in internet forum are like the articles in a newspaper/journal/magazine.

Many of the articles in newspaper/journal/magazine/internet are biased. You may not believe in what is stated in many of the articles. Journalists also jump to conclusions based on limited facts. Based on findings of one single research paper which can not be generalized. Then we have articles which are really intended to propagate a certain view.

These drawbacks or limitations also apply to articles and posts on the internet. In fact it is worse because the real identity of the author is not known.

In newspapers and magazines you could write a letter to the editor contradicting the journalist's view. People do it often. On the internet newspapers/blogs you could write a comment. In forums like this you express your point of view.

All these are commonly known. In forums it is clearly stated "All views expressed by the Members and Moderators here are that of the individuals only."

So all forum posts are the individual view/interpretation/opinion of the poster. This applies to all the posts. I find it strange that some one had to warn members about my posts being my personal view.

No one believes in all what is written in the news papers/magazines or the internet. It would be foolish and downright dangerous to do so.

But people are mature enough to make their own judgment.

good suggestion is to stay away from such members. severe damages were done to good souls, in the past

Shri iniyan,

While I broadly agree with your above post, it is not as if people read newspapers/journals etc., with basically no belief. Each reader selects a set of newspapers or journals which, in his/her view, gives more reliable news. Even then, today, any average reader would like the story or the news report to be "substantiated" with photos and/or videos, if on line.

In a similar manner, in this Forum also I consider the posts from some members as more reliable and containing substance, while the posts by some others appear to me as without substance and meaningless teasing or self-praise like "look how wise I am", etc. In the case of the former class of members, I try to study and try to grasp what they write but by nature, I don't believe what they say unless supporting evidence or references to such supporting documents are furnished.

This is where the "imo" problem comes in. Simple imos without solid supporting evidences/references put a question mark and it becomes difficult to believe what such members write, and at the same time, it is difficult to skip their posts as in the case of the other category of members. I feel that Shri Zebra had tried to present this difficulty only.

This applies to all material in the net, I will say.
