Is There 1 Public Prayer to Make Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Polytheists, Wiccans, and 'Devil Worshippers' All Happy?

This is the real secularism from a country where people are not ashamed to say that they believe in GOD. Where a vast majority believe in GOD.

Compare this with the fradulant secularism preached/practised by our intellectuals from the left, right and center.

I can never forget the time whem I did away with all the bumkum of lamp lighting while inaugerating a new premises. Almost every one blasted me for that.

Yes...there is a Universal greeting that can make everyone happy cos it wishes for happiness and peace for everyone/everything in the planet and the universe.

Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu

It is actually very very neutral...No mention of any God or any specific school of thought.

Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu is wrong and does not convey any meaning, afaik.

All these are HINDU and by no means Universal.

You could call this prayer Universal

Lead, kindly Light, amid th'encircling gloom;
Lead thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead thou me on!
Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene--one step enough for me.
But the non-Christians may not accept it. Most of the members of this forum would not.

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

No mention of Jesus. I remember Rt. Rev. Roland our school principal trying to convince us that this is a Universal prayer.

Dear Sir

How is it Hindu?? If we translate it to any other language it does not sound Hindu anymore.

But sir..your lead me..lead me "prayer" is not suitable for Atheists cos Atheist do not have anyone in the mind to lead them.

Further more it also says night is dark..I am far away from home..Devil worshipers might prefer darkness.

So you have to make a Devil Friendly prayer too yaar.

Objection!

Sexist prayer! LOL

Why say Father??

It has to be Our Person.

Why heaven??

What about hell??

So you see Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu is still the best..No Appa or Amma in Heaven or no light or darkness..its fair to everyone.

darkness to light -- ok
unreal to real --- even this is ok

fear of death to knowledge of immortality --- the former cannot be completely abolished, and on top of that there is this anxiety of ocean of knowledge that needs to be gained -- there seems to be a contradiction here! must be out of context!!

IMHO

Michael Jackson's song will be the best:

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race

Hindu point of view. That is why in a real secular country, you should not have any prayers in Government functions.

I don't understand the point -- this case is about a town starting their meetings with a prayer with heavy Christian overtones. Some people want to challenge this and are getting grilled by the conservative justices. This question of universal prayer by one of the conservative justices, Alito, is meant to show to the plaintiff that there is no such thing as universal prayer that will be acceptable to all, and therefore, might as well grin and bear it. I am unable to understand why this is real secularism.

Interestingly enough, conservative Christians here in the US also criticize the government policy of secularism, they want freedom to practice and display Christian religious symbols in public spaces. Somehow, when people criticize secularism what they want is to impose their religious symbols upon the minority with impunity.

I dont understand why theother posts seem hindu and this is universal, unless of course, if you mean to say that any prayer that is not in english is not universal...

It is a ticklish issue. Even in a supposedly secular administrations, people of different faiths are the instruments who deliver, with their myriad beliefs and customs. I wouldn't know how far a person is able to identify himself as a secular administrative body in office and a religious, custom/tradition-bound individual outside work. There can be no successful demarcation unless one is an atheist or an agnostic.

My signature, श्रेयो भूयात् सकल जनानाम्। (śreyo bhūyāt sakala janānām| = Let there be prosperity for all people) can be a universal, secular prayer, I feel.

Our ancestors did. My grand father who was a Judge use to remove his Vibhuthi before going to the court. He was an orthodox Brahmin. My father did it. Religion is personal and should be kept that way. When a person comes to you should be known by the official designation and not by your caste. Many people forget this and that creates a problem.

I fully agree with this

One has to be professional when it comes to work.

I know a doctor out here who prints his religious symbol on his official letter head which he uses to refer patients to hospital... I find this totally unprofessional.

Does this mean that our prime minister who holds the highest office has been unprofessional all these years or as with other things this one applies only to hindus?!

Dear Sir,

That is besides the point...you see in the case of a Judge he has to be fair and square and there should not even be a doubt in the mind of anyone that he might be bias based on anything.

So if a person does not display religious signs and symbols this doubt wont come up in anyone's mind.

After work he can don any symbol he wants.

Same for a doctor..I do not see why some doctors have to use religious symbols on their official letter head?

That is not needed and actually imposing his beliefs on others.

It is not just for Hindus alone..everyone should adopt being neutral in the line of duty.

Personally I feel uncomfortable with anyone who displays too much religious symbols in the line of duty.

I know a person who is also a politician and he loves to quote from Hindu religious text when addressing his party members.

I recently told him to stop doing that..cos religion and politics should not mix especially when the target audience are a bunch of politicians!LOL

He took my advice and reserves his religious speech only when addressing a non political meetings.

OMG, Sangom Sir! You know who wrote those words??

Please enjoy the full song rendered melodiously by Smt. M S S.

Maithreem Bhajatha
BTW, does not 'sukham' mean more than 'prosperity'? I think Renu's choice is the best! :first:
