Rang Rasiya

I happened to see Rang Rasiya , A film by Ketan Mehta on Painter Raja Ravi Varma.

Not a raja by birth , Travacore Raja gave him the title of Raja in appreciation of his work.

He got married to an aristocratic lady of royal family who did not appreciate his passion for painting.

He shifted to bombay on death of travancore raja and got patronised by Dewan of baroda who got him the patronage of Gaekwads of baroda.

His great contribution was paintings of indian gods and goddesses .

His inspiration was a lower middle class girl who modelled for him since she loves him.

His contribution was not only painting the pictures of these gods but taking them to the masses thru reprinting by buying a printing press and making mass

copies for distribution all over india.

No indian home or shop is/was complete without reprints of his pictures duly framed and hung in homes and shops.

He was vilified and taken to court for some pictures of lady who posed for him in goddess form semiclad , inviting the wrath of hindu fundamentalist and

acquitted .

His inspiration a model committed suicide due to societys disapproval of her action of posing for ravi varma.

He was awarded title 'kaiser e hind' by british govt and died in 1906.

A beautifully crafted film , worth enjoying

Hello sir, Thanks for review of the film, Its TRUE as you stated the paintings were too good,I have a painting copy as group of Indian ladies of different states with their different dressing manner, jewels, hair do, in different musicial instruments, its so perfect that very fine details will be elicited in his style, In my mom s place still they have a big original painting of Ravi varmas paint of a lady with all jewels in kerala style. Its my dad s ( Late S.S.Chandra mohan--CINEMATOGRAPHER) Grand father-late Sri KR SHRAMA-- ART DIRECTOR,worked in VASAN groups, his contribution were --Chandraleka -drum dance set ,Aayaiyar-,Big Nataraja statue ,etc . Thanks once again for giving me a chance to share these details.

I have half a dozen reprints large size which I have framed and mounted in my office room.

I keep a stock of them in rolled thick paper form.

when I have to attend a marriage, I frame one and present it to those getting married as a wall hanging.

the film is beautifully crafted with randeep hooda and nandini sen as stars. censors have been kind to them though it is with cuts and A certificate .

ketan mehta could not decide whether it is an art film or film for the masses. so could not satisfy both. It is a visual treat
