Although computing is becoming more widespread and more accessible, computing knowledge isn’t. Today’s generation is spoiled with slick User Interfaces and doesn’t know a thing about what is actually going on with their devices.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s founder, Eben Upton, noticed this and decided to do something about it. He discovered that today, computing is expensive and it is discouraged to tinker with gadgets, which is why after two years of development, he unveiled the Raspberry Pi: A $35
Computer that was surprisingly powerful and aimed to awaken the desire to learn about Computers in all, and make computing even more cheaper and accessible.
It was immediately sold out, and was a hit in the maker community. A cheap computer with lots of connectivity options and a community that likes to tinker with stuff? A match made in heaven.
Now, the Raspberry Pi foundation has announced that it has sold over 5 Million Units. While that may seem small when things like Smartphones are selling 10 million Units in a week, for something that was expected to sell only thousand units, it has sure come a long way.
And the launch of the Raspberry Pi 2 B just pushed forward the sales, with over 500,000 units being sold in a month, compared to the average of previous months which came down to 200,000.
In fact, it has become the most successful US Computer ever, eclipsing the likes of the BBC Micro and the ZX Sinclair Spectrum, an impressive achievement.
We hope that the Raspberry Pi Foundation continues to innovate and we hope that the Maker Community continues to find new ways to utilize this $35 computer.
What do you think? What does the future hold for the Raspberry Pi?
