Thanks for sharing this . Only yesterday I thought of visiting the rayar mess again after a long gap and happy to see your post . A small place but very tasty food . Need to visit again after a gap of 3 years .

There was another old heritage mess called Saidoji Mess in Triplicane. It was in the saidoji Lane(branching from the Pycrofts Road) there. It used to be the home away from home for the many bachelors who stayed in one of those numerous "mansions" in Triplicane. I do not know whether it is still there. It had its own strict rules like : 1. No wasting of food items. You can ask for any number of servings but not to waste. 2. No sipping of the tumbler. That makes it Echchil and so not allowed. 3. No question of sprinkling water on the banana leaf to clean it before items are served as each leaf is carefully prewashed before laid out before you.

The food was homely and tasty and very friendly to the digestive system.

It was my 'home' away from home.. for more than three years when I was a bachelor in Triplicane.. In fact I have mentioned about this in one of my stories..

But this Mess was closed about ten years back [ I may wrong in the No. of years ] after the Demise of 'IYER'

I have heard about one Ramana mess in triplicane from my elder brothers, and fondly called 'marana mess'. Strict rules like non sipping enforced.

I have enjoyed both rayar cafe and sydoji mess in triplicane. Mess was in the year 1963-64 and rayar cafe for 10 years from 1965, both were top notchers,
on each sunday i used to get pongal vadai from rayar cafe and rava dosai in the evenings. My daughters used to handover the basket with vessels to buy breakfast from rayar cafe. Many will be in the q to get their turn, one set of idlis will be consumed by 2-3 persons since the size will be small. Billing is on faith as told by the customer. Handmade chutney and kothsu for pongal still linger in my tongue. Quality was first those days
sydoji mess was first in all - porichakulambu, vattalkulambu all of tirunelveli taste and attakasam
past is prime. Hats off to those jambavans from 1970 i had the blessings of mylapore club. Luz canteen equivalent to the above. Till 1999 i enjoyed this . Then i moved to adyar
