Regarding marriages in these days.

Hi everyone. Am new to this site.

I have a question on which i have come across.

In these days many do marriages within same gothram just by adopting. i.e. if a girl whom i am gonna marry belongs to my gothram she will be adopted to her uncle's(thaai maaman) gothram and from uncle's lap kannikadhanam will be made. These are done mostly in case of love marriages. Parents do agree with it. Is it correct to do. Is traditions supports this. Please post your comments and validate my query regarding this.

With regards
KNP

Shri Purohit,

I think this query should have been made under a different section, if discussions about the pros & cons is what you intend. "This section deals with the philosophical roots of current practices - it does NOT deal with whether such practices should still be in place or not. If you want to question these this is NOT the thread for you; there is another thread in the Philosophy section that might work better."

So, I venture to give what little I know of. Adoption of daughter is not approved by any of the smritis (ancient hindu law codes). The Visnusmrtivyakhya Kesavavaijayanti Of Nanda Pandita is the lone text that speculates and tries to "justify" adoption of daughter, though Vishnusmriti itself does not speak about it. The hindu society has rarely, if ever, adopted a daughter in the past, it appears, except now. And the answer to your question is clear - No, the Smritis do not envisage it.

purohit,

there are atleast 2 threads that dealt extensively on this. sangom has answered your immediate query. if you are curious about the hot air generated here for this topic, kindly peruse the old posts. hope you enjoy them.

thank you.

I think it is like utilizing all the loopholes under IT act. I know an issueless man, kept on giving gift to his non-existent paternal nephew You can do whatever you want to do satisfying your own consciousness.
