"Maths prodigy, Sri Srinivasa Ramanujan has said that problems and solutions were told to him in his dream by Namagiri Thayar. Ramanujan had faith in Namagiri, faith in mathematics, faith in scientific inquiry and faith in our sastras.", said a knowledgeable person. If so is it not more appropriate to celebrate the birthday of Namagiri Thayar only as the 'National Mathematics Day'?

Yes it will be. Namagirithayar celebrating her own birthday. and all Namagirithayars joining the celebration and speaking about one among them for the achievements by thayar's one amsam which happened to come to the world in 1887. and some other Namagiri thyars will be making fun of it and will be going to bed with the happiness to dream happily about their neither-here-nor-there agnosticism until they wake up with a start in the midnight with the realization of the horrible helplessness in an all consuming faithless shunya. LOL.

But Namagiri Thayar contributed to mathematics only through Ramanujan; and not through you or me ! :-)

Going by your logic ...National Mathematics day should be in the honour of Acharya Nagarjuna.

He gave us the Shoonyavadha...after all what is maths without a Zero!

Shoonyavada is different from shunya - zero of mathematics. If you can propose and make that suggestion accepted by authorities or, we can have a nagarjuna shunya day; more than one event can occupy any day; like good governance day and christmas day.

Why is there a difference?

In Nothingness there is a Zero and in a Zero there is Nothingness.

Even in Wholeness there is No-thingness.

1. shunya is nothingness. Zero is just a representation of that.

2. in nothingness there is absolutely nothing. Not even the zerro and the idea represented by it.

3. if there is no-thingness in wholeness, it is not wholeness. It is just nothingness only.

This is the reason why India is lacking in producing good Scientists. For everything, we involve religion.

Such statements will create a situation whereby students may think that without intervention of God, especially in dreams, it is not possible to excel in science.

Ramanujam should have avoided such statements.
