Dear friends.

Samdhya vandana popularly referred to as Sandhya Vandanam is essential
Nithya Karma. It is the essense of Yoga and meditation.

1)Achamanam: When you pour water in the centre of palm it cools the entire nervous system .
2)Angavandanam: here various parts of the faces, are touched by different fingures by applying slight presure on cheek, eyes, nose, ear, shoulder, centre of chest invoking various names of Gods.chanting k kesava, narayana, meadhava, govinda, vishnu, madhusudana, thrivikrama, vamana, idhara, rishikesa. In fact these are accupresure points that relieves, stress, blood pressure, nervous debility,ac idity,as will revitalise the blood viens and blood transfusion sytem as a whole.

The body is exposed to mi lder sun rays to supplemDent vitamin D and the Vibuti gives cnessary C vitamin. To days medical science says that Vitamil D and Vitamin C should be taken to g ether so that both of them are assimilated.

Gayantri Mantra:Y It helps concentration, control heart beat, regularise blood circulation, regulates breathing, lungs, cleans nostrls, eyes, brain nerves, activate vital organs.

In ancient days every activity was mixed with a religous divine reason so that every one accept it as axiom without question.

In fact Sandhyavandanam is scientific way of yoga and medication for human body and activate immunity system.

The Goal of all these practices it to attain a still mind. "Chitta Vritthi Nirodaha" . It is only after stilling the mind a person can seek higher knowledge and eventually the knowledge of Brahman. One has to remove all stress associated with body and mind to get to a state of thoughtlessness. Nithya karma is a micro step towards that. Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Prathiyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Siddhi - Pathanjali's eight fold step to Salvation/ Libaration.

How do the various actions forming sandhyaavandanam (SV) help in any of these eight steps, except aasana (in the sense of 'seating') and 'praanaayaama' if it is practised according to the rules of the yoga system. Pratyaahaara means withdrawing (senses, mind and chittha) into one's self; how do the SV components achieve, or even help one to achieve this pratyaahaara?

Dear Veekay ji,

The mind is one of the most difficult to keep still.

When Sandhyavandanam is a fully action packed event...how can the mind be still?

How do people in the Urals of Russia and Okinawa in Japan live till 120 without performing any ritual?

If SV has all the positive medical implications, should it be restricted only to a group of people. Should not all mankind be encouraged to practice?

They may have other equivalent rituals. For example, Japanese tea ritual may have its own calming benefits. Each practice has to be evaluated on its own merits.

Sorry sir, you fell into the classic logic trap. A => B does not mean B => A Happens many times in this forum.

Dear Sir,

How can a series of ritual ablutions performed by a particular community (mostly mechanically) and which has no sound logic attached to it be construed as 'beneficial'? Chairman Mao had every vice known to man, yet he was healthy. Castro is going strong, so are some very elderly politicians in tamil nadu wearing yellow shawls.

I agree with you. The best way of prolonging life seems to be to become a despot with absolute power. E.g. Fidel Castro, Deng Xiaoping, Jyoti Basu, Karunanidhi. My guess is that Putin will live to be 100.

Why Putin in this list? We are fiddling with Kashmir for over 50 years and have even lost half of it to Pak and China. Please read about Chechen war and how he handled the North Caucasus issue. And he has used the gas boom to Russia s benefit to extend his influence over EU.

And why SV is beneficial, please read about "Pranayama" and its benefits. its an integral part of SV and improves breathing and promotes better circulation of oxygen . The Chanting of Gayathri is similar to meditation and improves concentration. The actual mantra means "Thanking and paying obeisance to the creator" .The squatting posture and namaskarams strenghens our body.

To test if it improves concentration of not, the non believers can chant "Om Namithayae namaha" 108 times and that would also improve concentration..Please try.
