Saying abhivAdanam
There are quite a few rules on when and how to say abhivAdanam. There are also equivalent set of rules on doing namaskAram.
Here are some of them:
1) You should say abhivAdanam only to those who can say pratyabhivadanam.
2) If you were to do a namaskaram to a sadas of brahmaNa-s, you should not
say one abhivAdanam for all. It should be done on a one-to-one basis.
3) You should not say abhivAdanam to sannyaasis, pitru-s, or devata samuuham
(the exception of saying this is only during sandhya vandanam).
4) You should not say abhivAdanam to women, with the exception of one's mother and guru' wife (again she is another mother)
5) You should not say abhivadanam to persons lying down, with wet clothes, feeling ill,or for persons sleeping, drunkards etc.,
6) Every male youngsters in our families must know abivadhanam to say when they do namaskarams to elderly people.

Interesting. Thank you. But we do AbhiAdanam during Amavasai Tharpanams which is meant for Pitu-s, isn't?

"abhivaadanam" is actually a self introduction with some elaborate details. It is correct to hold that one should say 'abhivaadanam' only to a person who can grasp its contents or meaning and pronounce the pratyabhivaadanam, which is not the same into., but a blessing.

Looking at the realistic position of the contents of the abhivaadaye mantra, it looks as though it has to be used only when you want the other person to know the full details contained in it and not in any other occasion. Somehow a wrong notion is being held by some of our newgen youth (who violate almost every code of brahmin behaviour, in the name of modernity, fashion and so on) that if you tell abhivaadaye while doing namaskaaram, you have become a brahmin of the highest quality! sad!!

I do not do abhivaadanam during, or as part of any Tarpanam. At what stage do you do it?
hi

yes in tharpanam abhivadanam is there....DEVADHABYA PITRUBHYACCA .........NITYA MEVA NAMO NAMAHA....THEN ABHIVADHANAM...

I reproduce excerpts from one of the books on the subject - for general information of our members:
