Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday abruptly shunted out the high profile Rakesh Maria as Mumbai police commissioner, raising questions over the real reasons behind the move and its timing. The official version says that Maria was shifted as the govt didn’t want to change CPs in middle of Ganesh Chaturthi. But the festival is from Sept 17-27. Maria’s term was to end on Sept 30.The abrupt ouster has fuelled speculation. Here are four possible reasons behind this sudden move:
1.Satyapal Singh, Maria’s predecessor and now BJP MP, told TV channels he had heard Maria “was close to Peter Mukerjea”.
2.Maria oversaw probe into Sheena murder and hogged limelight. CM Devendra Fadnavis had expressed unhappiness at this.
3.Appointed by previous Cong-NCP govt, Maria said to be close to Sharad Pawar.
4.NCP has alleged that Maria’s probe was set to expose money-laundering and possibly implicate influential business houses.
