The visionary leader of Singapore Lee is no more..He leaves behind a transformed country that is reckoned as an Asian Tiger that is prosperous and with an advanced economy..He single handedly led the economic growth of the country right from its independence way back in 1965..He blew away all opposition to his policies...He was very strict in enforcing order and discipline, the two cornerstones for its success..It is no doubt a small country..But can Lees methods be adopted in India..That calls for a debate!

Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's founding father and first prime minister, today died at the age of 91 of severe pneumonia.

Lee had been hospitalised at the Singapore General Hospital for severe pneumonia since February 5. In a statement issued today, the Prime Minister's Office said Lee passed away peacefully at the Singapore General Hospital at 3.18 am (local time), The Straits Times reported.

Arrangements for the public to pay respects and for the funeral proceedings will be announced later. The PMO has been giving daily updates on Lee since March 17 when his condition took a turn for the worse due to an infection.

Lee is considered the founding father of Singapore and is credited with transforming the city-state into an economic powerhouse within just three decades. He quit as prime minister in 1990 after 31 years in office.

Lee Kuan Yew: A great leader of the century.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew former PM of Singapore who set a record as longest serving Prime Minister of 31 years (1959-1990) in the World died on March,23, 2015.

It was Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who managed the miraculous transformation of Singapore’s economy from a tiny insignificant city State to mighty economic power by maintaining tight political control over the country. "Singapore’s government can best be described as a "soft" authoritarian regime, and at times it has not been so soft".

He understood the real problems of India better than many of our leaders. It was Mr.Lee Kuan Yew who said “ India not a real country,” but “32 separate nations that happen to be arrayed along the British rail line”.Mr. Lee felt that “ 'India has wasted decades in State planning and controls that have bogged it down in bureaucracy and corruption. A decentralised system would have allowed more centres like Bangalore and Bombay to grow and prosper... The caste system has been the enemy of meritocracy... India is a nation of unfulfilled greatness. Its potential has lain fallow, underused.” How true his words are.

Let me join our Prime Minister Modi and conclude that Mr Lee Kuan Yew was "A far-sighted statesman and a lion among leaders, Mr Lee Kuan Yew's life teaches valuable lessons to everyone. News of his demise is saddening".

In his article on Mr Lee Kuan Yew, former PM of Singapore, by Sanjaya Baru, entitled 'Strongman who took Singapore to the First World', published in the Hindu dated March 24, 2015, he has mentioned the following:

QUOTE

Mr Lee saw India as his nation's natural partner. He even retained the island's Sanskrit origin name - SIMHAPURA that became Singapore.

The original name of Singapore was Temasek.
The name was changed to Singapura in the 14th century when Sang Nila Utama stepped foot there and he supposedly saw a Lion..hence the name Singapura which has Sanskrit origins meaning City of the Lion. But God knows what he saw cos there are no lions in South East Asia!LOL

Even till today we out here in Msia refer to Singapore as Singapura when we speak in Malay.

yes...Singapore was part of Malaya(back then it was Malaya)....they broke away after independence.

I somehow am not too fond of Spore..the human touch is lacking there..its seems very mechanical.

That is what everyone says..its development is much faster but at the same time the cost of living is too high so finally it evens out to the same.

Jobs opportunities for Msia citizens in Msia is not a problem at all provided one has the needed qualifications.

So life is heaven here.

I like it here.

No complains who rules..as long as the citizens are happy its fine.

There is no country in the world which can give anyone 100% satisfaction..we just need to make the best use of what we have.

The former Singapore PM proved that with utmost discipline and strict rules anything can be achieved.

Unfortunately, we have failed to use his expertise.

Thank you Shri Brahmanyan for your informative post about Lee Kuan Yew...His long tenure was a blessing in disguise...He made sure that there was hardly any opposition to his policies..A benevolent dictator (though the latter word has negative connotation)
