Pandit Ravi Shankar (1920-2012)

In the death of Bharat Ratna Sitar Maestro Ravi Shankar, on Tuesday, December,11,2012, the world of Music has lost its highly prized possession. He was the brother of the famous Udaya Shanker and started his life as a dancer in his brother's troupe. But branched of to Hindustani Classical Music and had his training under the renowned teacher of Maihar gharana Ustad Allauddin Khan. Ravi Shankar married Ustad's daughter Annapurna Devi.

Pandit Ravi Shankar was one of the highly acclaimed persons in the world of music. He had won many awards from all around the world. A fellow of Sangeeth Natak Academy, recipient of Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna. A winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award, OBE from the Queen Elizabeth II, UNESCO International Music Council, Three Grammy Awards, Kalidas Samman and many more awards in recognition of his talent.

He was one of the first Indian Musicians to spread the knowledge of Hindustani Classical Music in the West and Americas. He was known for his bold experimentation in fusion of various styles in his music. He was associated with AIR for some time, also worked with Satyajit Ray as Music Director for his award winning films.

When he was just 10 years old, Pandit Ravi Shankar began performing in Europe and the U.S. with his family's Indian dance troupe. It wasa glamorous life: the best hotels, the best meals, celebrities coming backstage to say just how much they'd enjoyed the concert. But at age 18, Shankar gave up all the glitter and went back to a dusty little town in India to study with a guru who taught him the sitar. He apprenticed for years, then started to play in public on the ancient and difficult string instrument. Eventually, he became a master.

Ravi Shankar born as Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury.
Shankar was born on 7 April 1920 in Varanasi to a Bengali Brahmin family as the youngest of seven brothers.

Annapurna Devi, the first wife of Pandit Ravi Shankar, has said “India has lost one of the greatest musicians”.
Annapurna Devi can still remember the day in 1938 when Robu (as Ravi Shankar was known then), a pert westernised teenager then, first came to Maihar village in what is now Madhya Pradesh to learn from her father, sarod maestro Allauddin Khan. Ravi Shankar was 18 then, Annapurna 9.

Shankar married Allauddin Khan's daughter Annapurna Devi in 1941 and a son, Shubhendra Shankar, was born in 1942. Shankar separated from Devi during the 1940s and had a relationship with Kamala Shastri, a danseuse, beginning in the late 1940s. An affair with Sue Jones, a New York concert producer, led to the birth of Norah Jones in 1979. After separating from Kamala Shastri in 1981, Shankar lived with Sue Jones until 1986. He married Sukanya Rajan in 1989 at Chilkur Temple in Hyderabad, India. He had known her since the 1970s. In 1981, Anoushka Shankar was born to Shankar and Sukanya Rajan.
