Some resourceful people tested the water.

Wait for the D Day.

The rising was not as spontaneous as was made out.

They needed icons and Pepsi and Coca cola served the purpose.

Major Traders Association seems to have already decided to boycott..... soft drinks of MNC.... with the result ...like plain drinking water, these soft drinks may also become scarce in Tamil Nadu as has been reported by a Daily.

Let us wait and see.....

[h=1]Pepsi, Coca-Cola boycott begins in Tamil Nadu, retailers divided on traders' bodies's decision[/h]
Are shopkeepers selling these products? We do a status check in Chennai

Two of the biggest trade associations in Tamil Nadu have called for a boycott of Pepsi and Coca-Cola products from Wednesday onward.

The traders' bodies- Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangam and Tamil Nadu Traders Federation- had taken the decision to not sell the MNC giants' products from March 1 soon after the Jallikattu protests in the state.

"Most traders stopped selling Pepsi and Coca Cola products soon after the jallikattu protests. Now, more will join in," said Vellaiyan, head of the Tamil Nadu Traders Federation.

The demands for a ban on Pepsi and Coca-Cola had intensified during the Marina protests in January with agitators alleging that these companies were exploiting the state's water bodies to manufacture aerated drinks while farmers were facing severe drought.

The directive of the traders's bodies however does not mean an official ban.

After making the announcement to boycott the companies last month, the organisations had clarified that it is not a ban, but that they have just asked their members to not sell the products.

Speaking to The News Minute, Vellaiyan had earlier said, "We have told members not to sell these products at all. This includes every single product manufactured by these companies. There are 6000 smaller associations which come under our Federation. We do not have the authority to ban it, so we are asking members not to sell it. Many reports have found that such products contain pesticides and are poisonous to one’s health. It is a duty of a government to ban these products, but since the government is unwilling to do so, we decided to do it."

Tamil Nadu says fizz off to Coca Cola and Pepsi after Jallikattu protests

CHENNAI: From Wednesday, the top multinational cola brands would become as scarce as the drinking water in Tamil Nadu that they are accused of exploiting, following the decision taken by the major traders associations in the State to boycott the products from March 1.

What began as one of the several issues raised during the confluence of agitations that was called the jallikattu protests grew in scope after many among the public began boycotting the cola products marketed by MNC giants Pepsi and Coca Cola. Soon, traders followed suit; some out of activism, many due to pragmatism.

The owner of Super stores in Koyambedu said though he was not a part of the trade association, he has decided against placing fresh orders because of the steady decline in demand. Shop keepers who used to sell 50-60 pet bottles began seeing the sales crash to single figures.

After the two major traders associations announced the boycott from March 1, shopkeepers stopped taking fresh stocks.

While the shopkeepers are divided on completely refraining from selling the coke drinks in the approaching summer, the steep fall in sales forced some to sell off their stock at throw-away price before the deadline. In fact, as the day grew closer, some even sold the softdrinks, priced at Rs 30 for a 600 ml bottle, at just Rs 10 on the roadsides of Kotturpuram in Chennai.

Speaking to Express, Vanigar Sangangalin Kootamaipu president AM Vikramaraja said all small traders would close their doors to the two soft drink giants as planned, from Wednesday. As for retail and food chains, some of whom had paid in advance for the year's supply, a decision would be taken by Thursday, he added.

Other than the profits, an important factor for the shopkeeper to consider is the cooler that comes as part of the deal with the MNCs. If bought separately, some coolers cost up to Rs 1 lakh depending on the storage capacity.

Some like Lakshmanan S who runs a soft drink store at a commercial store in Thanjavur are hoping that the local brands like Bovonto, which are expected to gain due to the boycott, would also supply a refrigerator.

This is an issue between consumers and the soft drinks manufacturers.

Traders are only middle men in the distribution chain.

They should not be deciding on behalf of consumers.

It is their personal choice on what cola to take indian or foreign.

Pepsi and coke are bottled in india .

On one hand we propagate Make in India and when the foreigners do that, we prevent them from selling in india.lol

It is not about make in India,..........

It is about the harm that it causes to the human body.........

More recently, one of the brand admitted to the fact that it was not suitable for children and that it contained certain harmful chemicals.'

People who love to consume harmful chemicals thro' bottle are welcome to drink in barrels...in the interest of good heath. LOL

Starting with air everything is polluted in india.

Who are traders to decide what consumers should consume.

Once the manufacturers are given licence to make, the matter ends.

It is for consumers to take a call.

I remember anna university guindy banned colas many years back.

It was to promote juices by a local hotel chain who was peddling juices.

It is also a nice move to encourage local brands....

May be some of the local brands... though quality wise fine, are unable to compete with MNCs...

Of course, consumer is free to exercise his choice...!!

TN shops boycott Pepsi, Coke products to encourage local soft drink brands

Thousands of commercial outlets across Tamil Nadu launched a boycott of PepsiCo and Coca Cola products on Wednesday morning in a move to encourage local cola manufacturers.

The decision may cause the two soft drink giants to incur as much as Rs 1,400 crore in losses.

The Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu (TNVSP), the state’s largest trade body comprising 6,000 business enterprises and 1.5 million members, told HT that the boycott would be implemented at all retail outlets affiliated to it. Though the bigger supermarkets and restaurants – about 5,000 in number – sought more time, TNVSP representatives said they have scheduled a meeting to discuss the issue later in the evening.

“Their initial response is encouraging. They only want some time to work out the boycott plan. I am hopeful that they will also commit to a date by evening,” said AM Vikrama Raja, president of the traders’ body. “I am happy that shopkeepers are resisting very tempting offers – three to five crates free for every ten crates of foreign colas bought – from marketing agents of the soft drink giants. Almost 70% of our members have not ordered fresh stocks.”

Many shops already display ‘No Pepsi, No Coke’ posters prominently.

Madras High Court ruling may prove as a short in the arm of MNC soft drink manufacturers

Coca-Cola, PepsiCo get court relief in Tamil Nadu amid retail boycott

Madras high court has allowed Coca-Cola and Pepsi to draw water from Thamirabarani river in Tamil Nadu for their bottling plants
Excerpts:
…………………………………………

In the counter affidavits, the bottlers of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo claimed that they used only the excess water from the Thamirabarani river. Coca-Cola and PepsiCo said they were being picked on, adding that water was being supplied to other industries inside the region as well).

“Who said there is surplus water in the Thamirabharani river? The Central Water Commission has clearly said that the only river that has excess water in India is the Brahmaputra,” said Sundar Rajan, an activist of the environmental organization Poovulagin Nanbargal.
Tamil Nadu is facing its worst drought in the last 140 years, leading to the death of hundreds of farmers, said Rajan. Poovulagin Nanbargal has been campaigning against water being converted into a commodity. Spokespersons for Coca-Cola and PepsiCo declined to comment.

The Indian Beverages Association, in a statement, said: “Coca-Cola and PepsiCo India together provide direct employment to 2,000 families in Tamil Nadu and more than 5,000 families indirectly, through their extensive supply chain. They also play a critical role in improving the livelihood of over 2 lakh retailers, who earn more than Rs. 400 crore in income by selling products manufactured by the two companies.”
