The Temple
Namakkal is famous for a life-size Hanuman (Anjaneynar) Statue carved out of a single stone in the Anjeneyar Temple. The city lies at the foot of a huge rock, upon which there is a fort. The name Namakkal immediately brings to mind ‘Namakkal Anjaneyar’ – the temple of Hanuman at Namakkal. The idol of Hanuman is approx. 18 feet in height, and stands under open sky. Opposite to the Hanuman is a temple of Narasimha.
Namagiri Lakshmi Narasimhaswami Temple a beautiful "swayam udbhava" (naturally formed) murti of Lord Vishnu in the form of Sri Narasimha Swami. The ancient cave temple are carved out of an imposing hill. There is a separate shrine for Goddess Namagiri Lakshmi. Namagiri Lakshmi was the family Goddess of the renowned Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujam. Ramanujan credited his acumen to his family goddess, Mahalakshmi of Namakkal. He looked to her for inspiration in his work,[79] and claimed to dream of blood drops that symbolised her male consort, Narasimha, after which he would receive visions of scrolls of complex mathematical content unfolding before his eyes.[80] He often said, "An equation for me has no meaning, unless it represents a thought of God. It was in front of Namagiri Narashimhaswami, Saint Purandaradasa composed his famous song "Simha Rupanada Sri Hari, Namagirishane.."
Kudavarai Narasimhar: Sri Narasimmah is depicted with sharp nails used to kill Hiranya and the wonder is, the palm has stains of blood. There are Janaka, Sanadhanar, Sun, Moon and Brahmma around Him. As a Kudavarai Murthi, Tirumanjanam is not performed. It is performed to the procession deity only.
The Lord is generally known as Sri Lakshmi Narasimha, if Mother Sri Lakshmi is on his lap. In this temple, Sri Mahalakshmi has Her place on the chest of the Lord. Sri Namagiri Thayar (Mother Lakshmi) has her shrine here facing east. It is believed that the devotee would become a pundit in mathematics if he/she worships Mahalakshmi. There is a separate temple for Bhakta Anjaneya who brought the Anjaneya Salagrama.
Religious Significance
In Threthayuga, during the Ramayana period, Sri Hanuman lifted the Sanjeevi Mountain from the Himalayas to get medical herbs. He then took the mountain back and replaced it in its original place. When he returned, he brought a salagramam. During his journey, as the sun rose, he went down to the earth and performed the ritual of santhaya vanthanam after placing the salagramam near Sri Mahalakshmi’s tapavanam.
After performing the pooja, Hanuman tried to lift the salagramam, but was unable to move it as easily as before. Suddenly, the salagramam grew larger and Hanuman heard an oracle saying, “Lord Narasimha wishes to stay here and he wants Hanuman to save Sri Ramachandramurthy first of all.” Thus, Sri Hanuman completed his task and came to Namakkal Sthalam on the western side of the rock, where he stands in open air and worships Lord Narasimha Swamy.
