Horanadu is a lovely little place in the picturesque setting of the Western Ghats, in the Malnad region. It is famous for the ancient Annapoorneshwari Temple. Legend has it that this temple was originally built by Sage Agasthya.

The main deity, Goddess Annapoorneshwari, was installed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. Recently, in 1973, a new idol of the main deity was installed at the temple. The idol, made of gold, is captivatingly beautiful. The temple is now known as Adi – Shaktyatmaka Shree Annapoorneshwari Temple.

The Goddess is depicted with four hands, holding the Shanka, Chakra, Sri Chakra and Gayathri mantra. Annapoorneshwari is a form of Goddess Parvati. It is believed that once Lord Shiva was cursed and when he came here and accepted alms from Annapoorneshwari, the curse was lifted.

Annapoorneshwari means one who provides food. It is believed by devotees that whoever has the Goddess’ darshan and blessing will never go hungry in their life.
