Suryanar(Sun)
History : The temple was built by King Kulothunga Chola in the year 1100 AD. The temple’s Raja Gopuram is about 15.5 Meters high and has 3 stages with 5 kalasams on top and is one of a kind as it faces the western direction.
Temple specialty : The Suryanar Temple is the first of the Navagraha Sthalams that houses the Mollavar – Kasi Vishwanathar and all the other Navagraha’s without their vahanams(vehicles) around the Mollavar. The temple is one of a kind as it is dedicated to the Sun God- Surya. There are only two abodes in India that house the Sun god, Konark in the north of India (Odisha) which is World Heritage Site and the Suryanar Temple in the south.
The protocol to visit Tirumangalakkudi Shivasthalam located 1 Km aside of the Suryanar temple and the Sukran temple first is adviced for pilgrims before visiting the Suryan Temple.
Lord Surya graces in the temple facing west with a Lotus on both hands accompanied by His consorts Ushadevi on the left and Pradhyushadevi on the right. The Moolavar’s horse vehicle is also before Him, as Nandhi is before Lord Shiva.
The shrine of Koltheertha Vinayakar is in the right side which whose blessings devotees start their rituals. The north Prakaram houses the shrine of Thejas Satikeswarar .
This is the only temple where Guru (Jupiter) is opposite to the Sun god inside the sanctum to cool down the effect of the scorching heat from the Moolavar, and help devotees worship under a bearable temperature.
Vellerukku (Madar Plant) is the temple tree or Sthala Vriksham. Pillayar made out of the Vellerukku is sold in the shops here. It is a very holy possession and protects from the evil forces. Sakarai Pongal (Rice pudding made with jaggery) is offered to the deity as a thanks giving gesture and this is distributed among the devotees. Pilgrims also offer cradles seeking child boon.
