Story of a retired man spending his pension to fill potholes.
June 9, 2015
People usually blame government for the problems they face but we rarely find people who take the responsibility to make change happen. They are the real life heroes. One of such heroes stays in Hyderabad. We are sharing his story here.
Gangadhara Tilak Katnam is a 67-years old retired Railway employee. Unlike most of people who enjoy their retirement, Gangadhar has taken up a challenge to make his life interesting. He starts his car every morning and drives around on Hyderabad roads to repair the potholes. He has filled over 1,100 potholes so far and used his pension to meet the cost of doing this.
The work Gangadhar is doing is really life saving because these potholes cause many accidental deaths. Gangadhar started his work by collecting tar mixed gravel from roadside. He used to carry 4 to 5 bags of this material in his car and wherever he spotted a pothole, he used to fill it up using the gravel.
When he stopped finding the gravel dumped roadside, he started buying it from contractors. He is really dedicated to make Hyderabad roads safer.
Now that you have understood the work Gangadhar is doing. You must be wondering where and how this all started. The story is interesting too. One day, Gangadhar was driving his car when suddenly it went in a pothole. The muddy water into the pothole got splashed on few street kids who were present there. This incident made him feel ashamed. He immediately spent 5000 rupees to fill the pothole.
For last 2 and half years, Gangadhar is doing this one handedly and filled around 1125 potholes. Now that many software professionals and other citizens have also joined this initiative and doing “Shramdaan”. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has also started supplying BT Mix Material to Gangadhar.
