With Swamy Chinmayananda.webpThis is the most valuable Photo of our family taken in 1954 with Pujya Sri Swami Chinmayananda in our house at Coimbatore. Sri Swamiji was my first Guru who initiated me into the path of spiritual quest. Sri Swamiji was born on May 8, 1916. He was ordained into Sanyasa by Swami Sivananda Saraswathi on 25th of February 1949 at Rishikesh. As per the wishes of his guru, swami Chinmayananda proceeded to Uttarkashi and spent eight years studying the scriptures at the feet of Sri Swami Tapovanji Maharaj in the high Himalayas . After completing his studies, Sri Swamiji came down to the plains and travelled extensively " To convert Hindus to Hinduism" by his lectures and literature.

"Apart from lecturing Swami Chinmayananda wrote commentaries to major Vedantic texts as well as many of His own books that dealt with different aspects of true religion, including books for children. His approach is unique. By the use of scientific logic and simplicity of style He made the profound scriptural knowledge easy to understand and brought it closer to us by illustrating it with examples from our own life. Written in modern language they perfectly serve the needs of the modern people". (Chinmaya Mission, Chicago).

By the grace of God, I had the good fortune of associating myself as joint secretary to organize his seventh gnana yagna in India (first in the Coimbatore) as a College student in 1954.

Inaugurated by Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam on Wednesday the 6th of May, Sri Swamiji's birth centenary is being celebrated through out this year. He spread the message of Vedanta to the English speaking youngsters of my generation. On this happy occasion I salute and pay my respects to this great spiritual Guru.

I enjoy reading books by Swami Chinmayananda....especially his Q and A format Bhagavad Geeta.

He explains really well in a very unique way that makes understanding easier.

Dear Sri Krishna,

Yes, I shall be happy to share my association with Sri Swamiji. When he came to Coimbatore in 1954, not many knew about him, but within no time he attracted a lot of people by his dynamism and brilliant exposition of Upanishad and Gita. It is the will of God that I got associated with this great spiritual Guru and he remembered me by name till his demise in 1993. I have with me quite a few photographs taken during his stay in Coimbatore, which I would like to share with others. Kindly give me some time to gather my memory to write about my association with Sri Swamiji.

Warm Regards,
Brahmanyan,

Today I read an interesting article by Swamyji titled "Intelligent choices can change your destiny"..It is a excellent piece that will help one to create one's own destiny..I am posting the article below

Intelligent Choices Can Change Your Destiny

By: Swami Chinmayananda on May 07, 2015

What you meet in life is destiny! How you meet it is free will. Our shastras compare the omnipotent power of God to rain. The rain is common and equal in its blessings to all. Different seeds, nourished by the rain, grow, each to its individual stature, with different qualities.

Within us, the tendencies of our mind, called vasanas, are the seeds. They come about, exist, burst into expression, all according to a law. Thought by thought, new channels can be created -– flowering seeds sown, weeds plucked out, and in time, the jungle in our mind can be rendered into a fragrant garden.

A river, now wasting its waters, eroding the land, flowing as it will, can be tamed, its waters saved for productive use, and through newly opened channels we can make it water arid lands around into smiling cultivation. By self-effort everything is possible...

Life has two movements – forward and lateral, like a car on the road. The petrol will push the vehicle merely forward. The lateral movements are controlled by the driver. This forward dash in space is called destiny and the lateral movement is self-effort. If the driver is drunk, the forward movement of the car will dash it into gutters on the wayside, a tragic crash. But if the driver is intelligent, careful at every yard of the vehicle’s movement, he can take us to our destination safely.

We all possess one great gift – the ability to discover and develop the infinite possibilities within us. If we organise our lives in such a way as to discover the great potential within us, and if we order our behaviour so as to nurture and nourish that potential, our lives will be well spent. Our success lies in the amount of transformation we can bring about in our character and behaviour.

The question is not how many talents each one of us has, but how much of our existing talents we can explore and develop. An individual can have many talents – yet be a miserable failure in life. The successful person is one who makes practical use of at least one great talent that he possesses.

What we regularly encourage and cultivate in our minds determines our character and ultimately our destiny. An intelligent choice of thoughts can transform our character as well as our lives. Thus, the entire destiny of our life lies in our own hands. We can rebuild our future.

The law of karma, when correctly understood, is the greatest force of vitality in Indian philosophy. It makes us the architects of our own future. We are not helpless pawns in the hands of a mighty tyrant God, who, it is believed, has created us weak and tearful, to lead a life of limitation and pain. If we are weak or sorrowful, it is because of our own wilful actions. In our ignorance, in the past, we had pursued certain negative values of life and their fruits have now come up now to give us the pattern of circumstances we are living today.

Never mind. Take heart. By living rightly today the divine values of love, kindness, tolerance and mercy, we shall order a nobler pattern for our future. By careful self-management, we shall detect wrong tendencies in us, and overcome them through constant and conscious effort.

By cultivating a positive attitude, you can create your own destiny and in so doing, you can come to be the creator of your own future life. Be a God!

From 1962 I have been involved in Chinmaya Mission. In my first meeting with Swamiji in 1963 he opened my eyes to Gita, and his brand of Hinduism. Then he mesmerized with his organization skills and Knowledge. I still cherish the Gita, signed and presented to me in 1965. To me he was a great teacher and exception speaker.
I am still associated with the mission here in USA.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today released a commemorative coin to mark the birth centenary of Swami Chinmayananda.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister recalled the pioneering
work of Swami Chinmayananda in the field of education and social reform.
He described Swami Chinmayananda as a visionary, who saw the need to
inculcate India's great culture and spiritual traditions, through the
English medium, among an "elite" class of people, who had moved away
from this heritage.

Speaking about Swami Chinmayananda, the Prime Minister said that when
Swami ji talked about the Geeta, he was a Gyan-Margi (one who follows
the path of knowledge), and when he worked in his schools and hospitals,
he was a Karm-Margi (one who follows the path of work). He said, that
in this sense, Swami Chinmayananda's life is an inspiration for others.

He inspired lot of Smarthas to become Bhagavathas from all sects.

One popular Kadha expert from Brahacharanam sect married a Chozhia whose father is a popular Bhagavatha. Nice conversion.

Dear Brahmanyan sir,

Nice and handsome.

Dear Doctor,

Indeed Swamiji was a handsome personality with his flowing beard and aquiline nose. In those days Swamiji used to tie a Saffron bandana over his head, and wear wooden sandals that sanyasis use. His dress was simple with saffron Jibba and Dhothi. When he began his lectures with a long OM in his baritone voice, the entire place used to reverberate. It was an unforgetable experience. He was a stickler for punctuality. He never tolerated disturbance during his lectures. Once he starts his lectures he will ask the doors of the hall to be closed after few minutes.Because of the serious nature of the subject, that are dealt with, he expected the audiance to attune themselves to his wave length during the lectures. His lectures were in simple and impeccable english, interspersed with humourous anecdotes.
Now that many of his lectures are available in audio and video formats, you can listen them.

Very true and while most people were appreciative of the above but some were also put off by his extreme strictness with regard to punctuality and being disturbed during his lectures ( i.e people walking in the auditorium once the lecture starts , babies crying etc ) .Luckily he passed away before Cell Phones became popular . One can guess how he would have behaved if a cell phone rang while he was giving a talk ?

I guess she meant you and not Swamiji. LOL

A commemorative coin has been issued by Shri Narendra Modiji. Popularizing Geeta was his commendable service to the Society. He was condemned to be a journalist by another great person.
