When I was young I have seen the use of books printed in "Grantha script" in Veda Patasalas. Grantha is an important historical script that was once used to write Sanskrit throughout South East Asia and greater Tamil Nadu. It was popular in Tamil Nadu until the early 20th century. After a gradual decline,  Nagari  or Devanagari superseded it as the common script for Sanskrig after 1950.

One scholar writes "Lalitha Vistaram", a very ancient but undated Buddhist text of hagiography makes mention of the names of 64 different scripts besides Brahmi, to have been in vogue during its contemporary times. Various scripts have been used for Sanskrit at various periods !

Based on the archaelogical evidence available, some opine that Brahmi must be the first and original script used to write Sanskrit.
