'The angst of the Tamil brahmin: Live and let live

By Badri Seshadri

Brahmins may be at the top of the archaic social hierarchy, but in reality they hold little or no power across the country. They are numerically insignificant in most states and are not found in the public sphere at all. This is more so in Tamil Nadu than any other state.

Share of Tamil and Telugu brahmins was disproportionately large in the government of pre-independent Madras province. But the quota system initiated by the Justice party and the Dravidian movement over the years has meant that brahmins are almost completely excluded from medical seats, and are mostly out of contention in government jobs and good engineering schools. Brahmins once formed a significant percentage in teaching jobs in schools and colleges. Now, their percentage is minuscule.

Politically, brahmins have been complete ly stripped of any possible power. With very few options available in TN, there was a brahmin exodus to Bombay and Delhi in search of jobs in the 1970s. Post the liberalised 1990s, and the proliferation of self-financed engineering colleges, brahmins chose engineering and then IT jobs. As the need for executive managers arose in companies, many took to MBA. Today IT, management and CA are the chosen professions of brahmins. Many have migrated to the US and have been instrumental in many Silicon Valley start-up successes. Many have taken to entrepreneurship in India too and helped to seed the IT revolution in India. In Tamil Nadu, the political narrative has been stridently anti-brahminical. Though brahmins have been away from politics, the Dravidian parties have always resorted to blaming everything on a purported "brahminical conspiracy". Modi is brahminical. Jayalalitha too is, but only for DMK and not for AIADMK. Centre's promotion of Sanskrit or Hindi is brahminical. Congress or BJP's anti-LTTE stand is brahminical. Market economy and globalisation are termed brahminical.

It is also routine for Tamil movies to depict brahmins in bad light. The theme of the recent movie, `Jeeva', is that a brahminical conspiracy is keeping talented non-brahmin cricket players from reaching the state team. A putative theory about brahmins suppressing nonbrahmins for the last 2,000 years and denying them education and other privileges has gained currency and is today taken for granted. No proof is required. No further research is required.

Even OBC violence on dalits across the state is explained in terms of brahminism, a term that implies that all evils of the caste system are because of brahmins and hence they and only they have to be held responsible for such vio lence.

Yet, the reality is very different. Though no statistical data is available, anecdotally I can say that brahmins have inter-married more than any other caste in Tamil Nadu.

There is no rancour or resorting to honour killing when inter-caste or inter-religious marriages happen. They have been at the forefront of pre serving performing arts, heritage monuments and culture in the state and have done much to promote Tamil language and literature. They have contributed immensely to science, engineering, medi to science, engineering, medicine and education in the state.

Politically excluded and socially reviled, what can the Tamil brahmins do to preserve their identity and yet feel secure within the social space in Tamil Nadu and India?

Brahmins are unlikely to demand any kind of reservation in education, job or political sphere. All they would look for is an amenable climate where they can, like other communities, contribute to the progress of the nation. In a liberal country , we would like communities such as Muslims, Christians, Parsis and Jains preserving their unique faith, tradition, customs, attire, language and practices. The same has to be extended to the brahmins of Tamil Nadu. They should be allowed to retain multiple identities -that of a brahmin, a Tamil and an Indian -with pride.

The political hate narrative in Tamil Nadu must change.

I also follow a Dalit blog and even there its all about complain complain complain about unfairness and discrimination.

Most Brahmin articles too are the same..complain about being marginalized...treated unfairly..discrimination.

I have come to a conclusion that either ends of the spectrum are always complaining!

Its time to get on with life and humans should just make the best of what they have and use their ability/brains to carve the best for themselves.

Playing cry baby is not going to help.

P J sir
In another thread ' a thoughtful post by jayamohan' of kunjuppuji , sri vagane has made a link to this post.

there is a post by a writer jayamohan , a NB writer analysing sri badri seshadris times of india write up.

perhaps the threads can be combined.
regards

Dear Madam Renuka

"Playing cry baby is not going to help" - Great advice!
Did you give the same advice at this Dalit forum also? If not , why not?
What was their reaction to your advice?

only in this Forum it is possible to write anything and everything against Brahmins, against their practices and their rituals, against Hindu Gods ( particularly againt Sri krishna ) , and Brahmins way of worship , their crying , etc etc and get away with it!!

Such writings will not be tolerated in any other Brahmin Forums!! ( such members will be banned or at least warned of losing membership )

Believe it or not, I had the exact same question in mind.

Just want to know whether Renuka Madam remains as "point blank" elsewhere as she is in this forum :-)

Some members may feel hurt when others are forth right in their views

It is a fact that brahmins and dalits at both ends of caste spectrum feel marginalised and they sometimes express their anguish openly

specially Some one not belonging to their caste says so , it hurts their sensibilities more .

both members in this case have known each other for years and have taken liberties with each other,

both have even made fun of each other in this forum only.

so suddenly one feeling suddenly

hurt because of others comment , they can settle with each other thru private mail.

I hope both will take it in right spirit and continue in the same way as before.

Yes I did.

I did tell them that playing cry baby and inciting hatred wont help.

The response was many agreed with me and some did not.

BTW that blog has many Brahmin members too..cos there are major fights there when Dalits become Anti Brahmin.

I wonder why so many are out in full force?LOL

Keep it coming guys.

I did not write anything against anything.

I have noted that Dalit blogs too are always complaining the same thing as Brahmin blogs about discrimination and being marginalized so I stated my opinion.

If anyone did not like what I wrote kindly inform moderator.

I have no problems if my post is deleted.

In another thread another member too wrote that either end of the spectrum face similar problems in terms of discrimination and being marginalized ..I wonder why no one questioned that member there?

Weird isnt it?

Yes..you bet I am.

I have been point blank enough many places.

I have even written in my local newspaper for the Hindu Sangam to ban worship using snakes that are subjected to hours of pooja in a temple.

The response was good but the priest of the temple was not too happy and he gave his opinion too why he felt that he did no wrong.(I wrote this in forum sometime back)

I also emailed a Hindu Organization in India recently to start a signature campaign against the mass slaughter of animals in Nepal and they banned me from their email list! They are always protesting for cow slaughter by other religions but they close one eye when Hindus slaughter animals. I called them double standards!

So you bet I am..point-blank as ever and used to be being shot at too that I have learnt how to dodge the bullets!LOL

dear Krish ji,

Frankly speaking I appreciate it if anyone is forthright enough to be frank with me.

It is better that just being a mutual admiration society.

Let everyone speak their mind.

It will be lively and active for a change.

Mam, It is nice to be able to be "point blank" all the time but sometimes it is nice to be nice too. Again, I don't want to be judgmental here but just reflect on the above statement. Thanks...

Dear KalaBhairava sir,

I was surprised to see many out in full force. I was wondering "hey what did I write that launched such a response?LOL

Everyone only saw the cry baby word..no one read that I said its high time we humans move on and use their best of abilities to make the best of what they are capable of and have.

It was almost like an Arise Awake line but sadly it got misunderstood..anyway its no big deal.

BTW coming back to being nice.

Well.. they are many threads where I am nice.

So dont worry I leave it to you..how do you want me to be? "Nice or Real Bad!"LOL

I think we should move on and not continue this issue further.

there cannot be two opinions that we should all use our abilities to make the best of what we are capable of and have.

well said.

renukaji

my stance here has nothing to do with your views on many issues; you are forthright here, good, did show your point blank replies in your other Dalit Forum too ?

You can be here anything here, because you are allowed to do so.

PJsir

If someone is forthright , it is hardly to be condemned.

It is not wise to take one or two words out of context and not consider the whole post in entirety to realise what she is trying to convey.

only yesterday , you suggested the same to members asking them to ignore radharavis vulgar comments on a youtube post you had posted and suggested us to see what he was trying to

convey . lady members who were offended with your post obliged. there cannot be one rule for your post and another for other members. what is right for the goose should be right also for the gander/.

before taking offense , suggest see what you post first and delete the offensive video where bad words have been used before trying to find faults with posts of others.

as usual She is so far avoiding any direct answer!!

(Please go through some earlier posts in this)

Dear PJ sir,

Why should I keep proving myself every now and then to those who are not satisfied with my answers and keep suspecting that I am an Anti TB?

What next? A fire ordeal for me to prove that I am telling you the truth?

If you have a problem with me that is purely your problem.

I visit many sites using many different IDs..so why do I have to reveal to the whole world what I do online and reveal my ID in those sites. That is totally invasion of my online privacy and you have NO right to ask me to reveal it.

What other sites ID would you want in the future? Sunny Leone sites? You want me to reveal that too? To see if I accused her of being a cry baby when she refused some scenes in Pooja Bhat's movie?

BTW some members here do not use real names so why should I reveal my ID for other sites and forum?

The only reason I use my real name in TB forum is becos I feel is relatively safe!

If you think I am lying to you what I wrote in the Dalit blog its your problem and not mine.

I do not lie and thats it..take it or leave it.
