"The cockroach theory for self development"

At a restaurant, a cockroach suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on a lady.

She started screaming out of fear.

With a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach.

Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also got panicky.

The lady finally managed to push the cockroach away but ...it landed on another lady in the group.

Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continue the drama.

The waiter rushed forward to their rescue.

In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon the waiter.

The waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behavior of the cockroach on his shirt.

When he was confident enough, he grabbed it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.

Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, the antenna of my mind picked up a few thoughts and started wondering, was the cockroach responsible for their histrionic behavior?

If so, then why was the waiter not disturbed?

He handled it near to perfection, without any chaos.

It is not the cockroach, but the inability of those people to handle the disturbance caused by the cockroach, that disturbed the ladies.

I realized that, it is not the shouting of my father or my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but it's my inability to handle the disturbances caused by their shouting that disturbs me.

It's not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs me, but my inability to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam that disturbs me.

More than the problem, it's my reaction to the problem that creates chaos in my life.

Lessons learnt from the story:

I understood, I should not react in life.
I should always respond.

The women reacted, whereas the waiter responded.

Reactions are always instinctive whereas responses are always well thought of.

A beautiful way to understand............LIFE.

Person who is HAPPY is not because Everything is RIGHT in his Life..

He is HAPPY because his Attitude towards Everything in his Life is Right..!!,,,,,,,

"Really beautiful"...

If instead of a cockroach a hand grenade was thrown into the room and it still had some few seconds before it blew up....everyone would have run in panic including the waiter.

So was it the hand grenade that disturbed the people or was it their inability to handle the disturbance caused by the hand grenade? So the thin line between reaction and response would be totally blurred.

For all we know the cockroach would have escaped totally unhurt in the blast.

Moral of the story: Cockroach theory only holds good for a Cockroach.

I do have certain reservation about Dr.ji's opinion.. Handgrenade is not available everyday and in everyone's life.. but Cockroaches are.. This theory has to be taken as example based on normal life ...

It is said Cockroach is the oldest surviving one (animal or insect) on earth.

Our action should be based on real situation: cockroach episode requires patience; whereas hand grenade involves urgency and common sense.

Actually the waiter was not afraid of a cockroach that is why he was calm.

Ok you see I am afraid of cockroaches and I have a staff who is afraid of lizards.

I am not scared of lizards..so sometimes when she screams seeing a lizard I have to chase it away for her.

And if at all I encounter a cockroach she helps me cos she is not afraid of cockroaches.

Now coming to screaming in public like in this story is rather hard to believe.

Once when I was in India as a student I went to a shop to buy some stuff and when the shopkeeper gave me my change a cockroach flew out of his table drawer and landed on my me.

I was really scared but I dare not scream cos the engineering college guys nearby were all waiting and looking..they had weird looks on their faces and I knew they were waiting to see if I would scream.

I was really petrified but I dare not scream cos one of the guys was already saying 'Ok she is going to scream"

So I was forced to put a brave front and quickly flicked the cockroach away from me.

I dont know how I managed to do that..but I hope never to have an encounter such a situation again.

Then I heard the guys sigh that 'what a waste..she did not scream"

So you see in public we would think a 100 times before we scream cos we would not want people to laugh at us.

So this story is kind of weird that so many women did not mind screaming in public..didnt they feel shy to scream?

This story was quoted by Google's undar Pichai in one of his recent speeches

In Corporate parlance Cockroach theory means that if one company shares a bad news it means many more such negative news are likely to follow...It is our common belief that if we see one cockroach it means that many more that are hidden

There are many Cockroach like thoughts in life, that could invade mind, not in singles but in battalions; without practice, one would hardly overcome them.
