The first 4K Blu-Ray player is here

4K is less of a resolution and more of a revolution. Of course, it isn’t as drastic a change as that from SD to HD, but better clarity, better dynamic-range and better colors are surely there, and we aren’t complaining.
There is no technical barrier for 4K adoption. 4K TVs are getting cheaper, and many mainstream consumer devices can record and process 4K video.
However, there is a dearth of 4K content. Sure, some streaming services are offering 4K video, but they are far and in between. Moreover, these 4K streams require very high-bandwidth Internet that is used by a small subsection of people.
No, what we need is a physical medium. Like Blu-Ray eased the transition from SD to HD, there needs to be a physical medium that brings 4K Blu-ray to the masses.
The physical aspects have been decided, and now Samsung has come out with the world’s first 4K Blu-Ray player. It can play and upscale lower-resolution videos. It has support for 10 Bit color and the HDMI 2.0 port, thus improving picture quality and frame rates.
Now 20th Century Fox would be one of the first studios to start shipping out movies in compliance with the new Blu-Ray standard. New movies would release in 4K and some old ones would be remastered in 4K.
Samsung hasn’t announced the price, but expect it to be high. Wait a year or two for prices in this field to come down.
