The need to de-emphasize belonging to a Religion

I am thinking of a novel idea that may have an impact on how people view God and religion. Some really thought provoking posts by the members, specially ones by Smt.Renuka made me think along the following lines:

I believe more than belonging to a particular religion, the actual practice of the religion is important. The emphasis on being a Hindu or a Muslim or a Christian seems to me should not matter but whether you practice what a religion says. That I think is a pragmatic approach. One should be able to practice something that satisfies his attitude and objectives and not be forced to practice something by dint of his birth. For example if one's objective is to lead a peaceful inner life by overcoming his emotions, then the teachings of hinduism are more appropriate for him and he is likely to find solution and solace in it.

Actually hinduism is called Sanatana dharma and is more and rightly regarded as a way of life. I think this is the right approach and the emphasis on belonging to a religion is less.

I would like to start an initiative where right information and guidance is given to people on the matters of religion and God. I would like to put forth the following as the major objectives:

1. De-Emphasising the belonging to a religion
2. Reforms for doing away with birth based classification of people based on spiritual perspective
3. Emphasising the rationale for the existence of God
4. Advocating freedom in the choice of God
5. Popularizing esoteric but valuable philosophies so that their scientific and spiritual significance are understood.

The idea is to form beliefs in people that can stand the test of time and not based on narrow vision. Possessing narrow and so contradictory beliefs is the major reason why people make their choices in reality on prejudice and emotions thought they would like to think themselves as rational. If it is possible to work on the fundamental beliefs, I think a real change can be brought about in the attitude of the people and in how they behave.

I think belief in God without being narrow minded in one's vision related to God is central to the accomplishment of consistent set of beliefs and hence the emphasis on the above objectives.

Sravna...are you really saying this?

Why are you starting to sound like me?LOL

sravnaji

you appear to be the most sensitive person of this forum.

you are getting influenced by thoughts not consistent with your religion as it is practised

I like the last line that'belief in God without being narrow minded in ones vision of God is

central to accomplishment of consistent set of beliefs''

whether one can bring about changes in fundamental beliefs or change either the attitude or

behaviour of people is open to doubt.

cheers

Dear Krishji,

I believe that being dogmatic about your beliefs when you know they are contradictory is not in your or others interests. I do not mind altering my beliefs if they are faulty.
