Sure, Apple’s products may have the lion’s share of industry profits, but they are still behind the curve when it comes to adopting new technologies.
Apple prefers to evaluate the use case of a particular technology, and when it determines it as necessary, it integrates it into its products.
Take NFC, for example, which first appeared in Andrid phones many years ago, but came to Apple’s shores only in 2014, with the iPhone 6.
Now, waterproofing isn’t a technology per se, but it is a feature that is slowly appearing in more and more Android smartphones, and according to a patent that Apple filed in 2014 (revealed recently), Apple is interested in making the iPhone waterproof by covering the ports with an elastomer. Now, Apple has already done half the job, since the 6s is remarkably water-resistant, but with the iPhone 7, it is going all in.
Basically, it functions as a normal port, with the rubber outer covering reshaping when the a cable is plugged in. Then, when you unplug the cable, it closes up, thus eliminating the possibility of any liquid entering the phone.
We have to wait almost a year though for the iPhone 7, which is most likely when this technology will be deployed. What do you think? Can waterproofing make you upgrade to a new iPhone?
