I asked for riches that I might be happy;
I was given poverty that I might be wise.
I asked for Power that I might have praise of men;
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for health that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.
I asked for all things that I might enjoy life;
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.

simple total surrender not asking anything but knowing that we are also part of the whole secret is the real prayer and i feel this bestows everything better for each according to their necessity at every time, place and stage in life.

Normally, if a person starts worshiping or doing prayer, at the first outset, puts up his/
her demands or desires in front of HIM. Some say please excuse me if there is any
mistake committed and then one will say that he/she makes absolute surrender to HIM
and takes oath to fulfill certain commitments, hoping by doing that the Supreme Power
will oblige him/her and while someone wants to learn from a learned person or a Guru
how to seek the blessings of Supreme Power particularly to seek answer to their
personal prayers. In short prayer or worship is nothing but absolute surrender to the
God without any expectations from HIM with all humility. Some may do it with emotion
or some may do it with motionable activities like anga pradakshinam, vratham or fast,
etc. However, one must understand and learn the exercise to control the power of
mind and dedicate the entire heart mind towards HIM. One need not have to go through
life desires. One should learn live with what the Supreme Power has given us. One
has to think the Supreme Power has already fulfilled all our desires. It all depends on the
persistence, which is the key to a change a person's life towards spiritual activities.
One can have any type of imagination, but one should be able to dedicate on the Supreme
Power and try to bring the image of the Supreme before his/her mind while doing prayer.
i.e. one has to dwell there as though it is a true one only. I meant Vedas, there are lot
of scriptures, where it is mentioned besides the Sanathana Dharma magazine gives lot
of inputs on the secrets of prayer.

Sometimes what we want is not for us, some of us pray so hard for difficulties that are wrapped in what we think is a ''blessing'' on the outside. Ask for whats right, God sees the past, present and future. Why use our limited technology when God has the ultimate technology :).

In my not-so-brief lifetime, I have seen several cases of people praying fervently - some even were very dedicated devotees of one guru/baba or another and were doing the prayers according to the directions of the said guru/baba, but they could not get whatever they wanted, like freedom from ill-health & disease, freedom from poverty and privation, etc. When ultimately the very people who prayed or the very guru/baba who advised such people died, everyone including the near and dear ones of those who prayed, comforted themselves saying "கொடுத்துவெச்சது அவ்வளவு தான்", i.e., that was what was fated.

If, as NBS observes
"prayer or worship is nothing but absolute surrender to the
God without any expectations from HIM with all humility",
such a prayer just does not mean anything especially in this 21st. century; if we have to make absolute surrender to an external God (who is only in our imagination, and will not directly answer us) and that too without any expectations of what that God would do to us or with us, it is worse than bonded labour. It is therefore better imho, to blame everything on Fate and live without any prayer to such a God.

One may not become a bonded labour, rather may become a bonded devotee.
It is generally said that the prayers go unanswered, but it is not so. One can
consider the experiences of our ancestors, who had enjoyed the God's wish and
blessings. May be not at once but in reality their prayers were answered in full
in the course of time. A believer's constant prayer certainly fetches the
good results. We have many Scriptures, where we read the story as to how the
God has spoken and also what God wanted to say. One has to silence all the
unwanted thoughts and allow the doors of the mind to be opened, i.e. devoted,
dedicated prayer.
