This is the title of a BBC story...Barbering is one of the oldest professions...In the North , Muslims are the barbers..In TN, it is the Melakkarar or so called Isai velallars...Also called as Navidar, Nassuvan or Ambattan..

Though the term Barber is gender neutral we do not have female barber shops..It may be called as a Hair stylist or Beautician and the shop called as Beauty parlour

Nowadays females go to parlors regularly for hair trimming, coloring, curling, pedicure, manicure or a facial ...

Men go to a barber for mainly a haircut or shave..But for style, they prefer a salon where the hair stylist who will suggest various hair styling products, do hair coloring, facial, head massage, foot massage etc

International beauty brands have set shop in India and are available in most of the Malls..
VLCC, Shahnaz hussain, Naturals unisex, Lakme, VLCC , Affinity have set shop ..These are expensive..There are people willing to spend about 2K to 5K on these salons while their poor cousins get the work done for a Rs 100 (simple haircut)

BBC News - The wisdom of barbers

Out here Chinese are the best hairstylist.

My hairstylist has a diploma in hairstyling from UK and he is simply superb in his work.

My family goes to him..including my mother, my son and brothers.

Only my husband and father prefer the traditional Indian barber.

When I was a student in India I used to get my hair trimmed by an Indian lady beautician but she was not that great in hair cutting skills.

Even another Indian male hairstylist I have been too in Msia is just so so and not all that great even though he is also London trained

Chinese are just brilliant in hair styling..so I always stick to my Chinese male hair stylist.

I prefer male stylist cos they talk less and finish the job faster than females and when they give you a head massage stronger grip feels better than a females soft touch.

Female hair stylist tend to want to get to talk too much and sometimes I might not have the mood to talk.

Wisdom in music!

Some from this community are nadhaswaram and thavil players. This loud acoustic instrument, the nadhaswaram,

is a double reed instrument traditionally played at weddings and in temples. :thumb:

This blog ''
India | The art of the barber'' is very interesting, with relevant photos!

Of late shady joints advertising for massaging services have sprouted in every corner of the city..Back door entry of prostitution rings to corrupt the youth!

The Nadaswaram players from humble Isai Velalar background used to visit our house during Deepavali day and play the Managala Vadyam..
