Is this yellow festival really important as per our shastra? Girls hit puberty by the time they are 11/12 (sometimes even 10!) and parents feel more and more uncomfortable to declare their 'big woman status' while still doing 5th and 6th grade at school!

yes, for some communities, they even print notices and paste all over the walls of nearby streets and celebrate it grandly

Dear Jayashree,

Some decades back, Brahmins used to have the 'manaila vaichchup pAdaRa' function, in which some close relatives participate.

The maternal uncle gifts a saree to the 'big girl'. But now a days, since girls come of age when they are very young (thanks to the

hormone mixed milk!), no one cares to declares the 'news' to others!
