THIAGARAJA – 1767 - 1847
Thiagaraja Aradhanai is being celebrated today. Podhigai TV has telecast live of the Pancharathna Krithis performed by Vidwans and Vidhushis in Thiruvayuru.
Thiagaraja was one of the Karnatic Music Trinity; the other two being Muthuswamy Dikshidhar and Shyama Shastri. In the 12[SUP]th[/SUP] / 13[SUP]th[/SUP] centuries, there was a Tamil Trinity – they are Muthuthandavar, Marimutha Pillai and Arunachala Kavirayar.
Thiagaraja has lot of names; Thiagabrahmam, Thiagaraja Swamigal, Thiagaiyya etc. He had written his Kirthanis in Telugu and Sanskrit.
His parents were Telugu speaking Smarthas. While his father and brother had staunch Shiva devotees, his affection was towards man God Rama. This has caused trouble in his personal life. He was driven out of house and he returned and lot of tamasha.
He had written lot of songs in different Ragas like others and has been given more prominence by Carnatic Musicians. Though Muthuswamy Dikshidhar, who was a Tamil speaking Smartha and well versed in Sanskrt and Telugu, apart from being an intellectual, the prominence given to him is less. The notable feature of Dikshidhar’s songs is that not only did he praise a God of a particular place, but also made mention about the place in which the God is situated in his Kirthanis. Kamalambal Navavarna, the Magnum Opus, has some Mathematical calculation behind it.
So far, there is no deep comparison made by Carnatic Music specialists on the various Composers. Such an exercise will definitely throw a light on the individual’s creativity.
Coming to the point:
Being a Smartha, I am pained to note that Abhikesham and Aradhanai are being performed to Thiagaraja, who was a human being. These were performed by none other than Gurukkals. Such activities must be restricted only to Lord Shiva and his family members, and of course, Nandikeshwarar.
The notable thing about Telugu speaking people is that if they want to glorify a person or God, they met with lot of success – Thiagaraja, Sai Baba and Thirupathi. They have lot of unity. Such oneness is totally lacking among Tamilians. That is the reason why Muthuswamy Dikshidhar, who is a Tamil intellectual, is not given much prominence by none other than even Tamil speaking Smarthas. It is necessary to have a deep comparison of these Composer to know who is really great.
