Prepared for Pi Day? This year it's a once in a century celebration

Pi Day – on March 14 – will be particularly memorable this year: the date can be written 3/14 by those who opt for the month then day format, which is Pi to two decimal places, 3.14. If you include the year this year then that gives 3/14/15, which is Pi to four decimal places, 3.1415.
This happens only once a century, and the Museum of Mathematics in New York City, among others, is taking Pi Day 2015 one step further, by celebrating at 9:26pm, adding three more digits to Pi, 3.1415926.
You can personally celebrate the event 12 hours earlier at 9.26am, wait a further 53 seconds to get 3.141592653 Pi to nine decimal places. That’s probably the best time and date approximation to Pi you can get with your typical time piece, although the digits of Pi continue on indefinitely, but more on that later.
Chicagoans plan to celebrate Pi Day this year by running in a Pi-K race of 3.14 miles. Numerous city bakeries are offering special pies for the occasion at US$3.14 per slice.

Irrational Numbers

pi1.png

Followers of the Greek mathematician Pythagoras held numbers in great reverence and awe. Their chief belief was that “Integers” or the “whole numbers” held the secret of the Universe, concealed in them.

According to them any number can be expressed as a whole number or a ratio of two whole numbers. The numbers less than one, can be put as 49/50 or 91/100 etc. So they were duly shocked, when a strange type of number, which they named as “irrational number”, was discovered.

The length of the diagonal of a square, with unit length as its side, is given as the square root of 2, by Pythagoras Theorem. Try as they might, Pythagoreans could not put it as a ratio of two numbers, completely.

Depending on the accuracy of calculations, the value of the square root of 2 was 14/10 or 141/100 or 1414/1000 etc. It could never be completely revealed as the ratio of two whole numbers.

The same is true of many numbers. Perfect squares like 1, 4, 9, and 16 have their square roots as 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. But all the numbers lying in between these perfect squares, like 2,3,5,6,7,8, 10,11,12,13,14,15 have non-ending square roots, which are irrational numbers.

Pythagoreans were forbidden to reveal this startling discovery, under the pain of death. New and revolutionary discoveries have never been accepted or acclaimed easily.

Whether or not we want to have them, the irrational numbers do exist and we have learnt to live with them.

First Baudhayana Sulabha Sutra of 6th century does mention about of Pi..next is Aryabhatta working out the Pi to be 3.146.

Knowledge is Universal and it can be "tapped" by individuals who manage to enter the frequency of knowledge..that is why we find even 2 or more people from different regions coming up with the same theory at the same time.

It is not who is smarter or who is a pioneer..its all depends who decided to tune in first.

You are right Renu.
The seers can see/ hear mantra in the aakaash.
The one who tunes in finely gets is first.
The epics are so well descrbed as though the composer
actually sees the events reproduced in front of his eyes.
It actually happens when we tune in to the vibrations
which never get destroyed even if they may get lost in space.

Congrats Professor!

Thanks RR Madam for posting the news of this wizard who is in our midst...But what is the identity of the face in the forum?

He, like many other professors here, will exhibit just the tip of the
ice mountain of his deep knwowledge - unlike people like me
who put down everything that occurs in black and white!

He is an admirer of Carnatic music.

He posts nice classical songs in two threads in music forum.

Here is one of his latest posts in 'RAgam ThAnam pallavi' thread:

Thank you Raji Madam for showing us the face of mskmoorthy Sir!

Dear MSKMoorthy Sir,

Your mind boggling mental prowess remind me of another mathematical genius /human computer Smt Shakuntala Devi

Yes Madam...thank you...I saw it in the blog hidden! May be you can provide the index in the main page itself..It is on the right side now & comes only after clicking(I had to click at 2-3 places and after trial & error it opened)

Dear Mr. Vagne
Each of the 18 the sub-headings is given as the introductory page
to that section, with a few interestig images.
The number of articles may vary from 10 to 20 under each section.
So the entire list is given in the home page itself
to avoid unnecessary navigation in every direction.
It is much simpler this way.
The drop lists on the top of the home page also help you to select the sub-heading as well as the article under that sub-heading
without having to seive through the entire long list.
And of course the search engine is also there. :)

Dear Shri Ganesh sir,

Thanks for your kind words. I am no where near Smt. Shakuntala Devi. I did this act for fun. This video was taken nearly 17 years ago.

Teaching/Research have been occupying most of my time.

Kind Regards to you and all the lovers of Pi and Math,

Moorthy

MSK Sir,

It is not an easy task ...You are rattling the numbers as a mantra!
