Before the advent of Auto Rickshaws, we had only Jadka, a horse pulled Cart; in those days traveling by Jadka was real fun, sitting by the side of the Cart man ; Carts used to have funny names like Desingu Raja, Madurai Veeran, Parakkum Pavai.. like that.

Around the Rail stations, Jadka Stand is very common, and families used to travel by them only.

I remember when I was very young ( once up on a time.. long ago) we brothers went to Kancheepuram by Train (to spend our summer vacation) as Train fare was cheaper than Bus fare; our amma gave us Idly packets for eating during the journey and for water, we carried a Kooja..!!

When the train reached Chenglepet junction, we opened our idly packets and ate..!!
No money so no coffee after that.

On reaching Kancheepuram station, our chithappa came to receive us and took us to his home which was near Sri.Varadaraja Perumal Temple.

Every evening we used to wait in the Temple for Puliyodarai Prasadam, and that was the tastiest one we ever had in those days..!!

Life was very simple, without any expectation, and there was fondness in every family..

Please share your experiences..

We had a 'AsthAna mAttu vaNdi' at Sholavandan railway station. We use it to carry luggage, ladies and kids only!

Gentlemen used to walk up to the village easily! Takes about 15 minutes for long legged people! :) Now autos have

been introduced and no sight of our dear mAttu vaNdi!!

My mom traveled by a 'kudhirai vaNdi' from Kodambakkam to Vadapalani temple, when I was a kid. :)

The stinking camels drove me away and I could not take the camel cart ride that I wished to take, when we visited

Agra recently. We had to choose a battery operated rickshaw to reach the entrance of Taj Mahal, from the parking area.

Came cart at Taj:

When we were in Jodhpur from 1978 to 1982, I was a kid between 2 and 6 years. During our 4 years of life in Jodhpur, we used to enjoy a lot traveling by "Tanga". A cart pulled by a horse called as Tanga. The horseshoe makes a solid sound like "tok-tok-tok-tok" which itself was a pleasure to hear when the horse pulls the cart and the sound gets intense with the speed of the moving horse. Before getting into tanga or after alighting or on the way we used to have "Ganna Ras - Sugar cane juice" with Black Salt sprinkled. We never got to enjoy such an awesome Sugar Cane juice any where else there after.

Samosa, Kachori, Mirchi Pakoda (Molaga Bajji) are the best in Rajasthan. We use to enjoy those spicy and tasty snacks and finally go for Sugar Cane Juice and then travel back to home on Tanga....Wow!!! What a nostalgic feeling!!
