It is opined by some that worship of Ugra devatas should best take place only upon initiation from an authentic guru.
It is said that Ugra devatas such as Kali, Sri Narasimhar killing Hiranyakashipu in his laps, Kala Bhairavar, most of the mahavidyas that portray an ugra swaroopa such as having severed heads and so forth, when worshiped without proper guidance, might work to destroy all the desires of the sadhaka and sever his material bondage and ties, such that his only ambition and the resultant state in his life would become that of a 'sanyasi'. Another caveat with worshiping Ugra devatas such as some of the mahavidyas is that they will invariably grant the sadhaka with siddhis and he has great potential to become entrapped in them that he can be pushed into a delusional state too...
Not everybody wants to become a sanyasi, atleast right away... many want a fulfillment of their desire, such as rising up in Politics to a powerful position, become surrounded by wealth and affluence and so forth. When ugra devatas are worshiped it is said they will act in a way to sever all these ties and desires... so say some of the learned.
