US is ranked 17

Why Finland's Unorthodox Education System Is The Best In The World

Finnish children don't start school until they are 7.

They rarely take exams or do homework until they are well into their teens.

The children are not measured at all for the first six years of their education
There is only one mandatory standardized test in
Finland, taken when children are 16.
All children, clever or not, are taught in the same classrooms.
The difference between weakest and strongest students is the smallest in the World.
Science classes are capped at 16 students so that they may perform practical experiments in every class.
Elementary school students get 75 minutes of recess a day in Finnish versus an average of 27 minutes in the
US.
Teachers only spend 4 hours a day in the classroom, and take 2 hours a week for "professional development."
Teachers are selected from the top 10% of graduates.
Teachers are given the same status as doctors and lawyers

Good teachers are essential to high-quality education. Finding and retaining them is not necessarily a question of high pay. Instead, teachers need to be treated as the valuable professionals they are, not as technicians in a huge, educational machine.

ScandAsia.Com - Finland and Singapore top world's 'best education' list

Many schools are small enough so that teachers know every student. If one method fails, teachers consult with colleagues to try something else. They seem to relish the challenge.

“Children from wealthy families with lots of education can be taught by stupid teachers,” Louhivuori said, smiling. “We try to catch the weak students. It’s deep in our thinking.”

LOL! God knows which number Malaysia is?

But I liked my education here.

I started school at the age of 7 and studied in Bahasa Melayu medium..here we do not study in English.

I had Tamil as a second language in school but did not sit for any exam.

Some schools offer Hindi/Punjabi/Arabic too for O level exams.

Learnt Jawi too (local arabic like script)

Students with a distinction in O levels Bahasa Malaysia are always given 1st preference even when it comes to a job in the government service.

That's why I made sure I studied hard and obtained a distinction in Bahasa Malaysia..most students in science stream normally do not fare too well in Bahasa Malaysia and if a person does not get a minimum credit pass their pay rise might be affected if he/she works in the government service.

Now the government has abolished some major exams to make student all rounders so that they are not just only academically inclined.

If two students are having same marks and are competing for a seat in University the student with a advantage in sports/games is given 1st preference.

So we have to be active in sports too for a better seat in University.

At the University level also, India comes nowhere;
India has one university ranked in the top 500: the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. One solitary university ranked in the 400s
India’s population is larger than the combined population of North America, Latin America, Northern Europe, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, and Oceania. Together those have regions have 428 in the top 500 — and India has one.

Leading the pack, the top five spots in the world rankings are American: Harvard, Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley, and Cambridge. It does not stop there, of course. In the top 20, the US captures 17 spots; 53 in the top 100; 85 in the top 200; and so on. The US dominates the world in education.

Sometimes people have found fault with me for rating the West as the best. At least let me record my difference here. The various comments below the report reveal that the report could be a cooked-up one. And I invite attention to the following also:

"Unfortunately, I believe there is sometihing not right about this article. I trained as a school teacher and I found the standards in this country to be extremely low. Compared to our european neighbours, british students are required to know much less, Maybe thats why the pass rates are so high?????? Hence, being high on the list?? The amount of illiteracy in the UK is incredible."

imho, our Indian Kids are required to learn a lot more in the school stage itself and that is one reason why our youth are able to acclimatize themselves rather easily to foreign living conditions and become OICs.

But I loved my medical college in India!

It was really good.

Dedicated lecturers would give us excellent notes..hostel and food sucked but studies was good.

We had so many dead bodies to study on.

I used to like 2 TB professors..One was nominated for Nobel Price for his Biochemistry research.
One more TB proff(lady) would dance and sing in class for us..she was really fun.

You know boys hostel had 24 hours water supply but girls hostel had water rationing..only in morning and evening we had water!
That was not fair ok!

Girls hostel always more power failure but the electrician loved to hang around the girls hostel so we always got things repaired.

Sometimes he would get a free show too cos some girls would think their friends are knocking on the door and open it half clad and only to scream seeing the electrician outside the door too!LOL

He loved his job and was dedicated.

Then there was this hostel watch man whom we could all bribe when ever we came back real late.

He would even help us out when we did not want to meet anyone who came visiting to hostel and we will tell him lie to that person that we are not in hostel.

He even knew which girl was double timing having 2 boyfriends and he would warn the girls that your other boyfriend is waiting at the other entrance and beware.

Where else can you get a place like this..I would certainly go back to India for studies over and over again.

sangom sir's observation "Indian Kids are required to learn a lot more in the school stage itself and that is one reason why our youth are able to acclimatize themselves rather easily to foreign living conditions and become OICs" is probably right.
Indian youths do fairly well and succeed in other countries in every field.

Dear Sir,

Most of us preferred to study in India cos it's nearer to home(Msia) and lifestyle is not that much of a difference.

So no real cultural and lifestyle shock.

Shri PJ,

One doctor, related to me, who worked in India, S'pore and now in the UK somewhere says that Indian doctors or doctors who have worked in India are in great demand by other medicos in UK. The reason, within the first few relevant tests and a physical examination of the patient, these doctors are able to guess one or two possibilities correctly and the job is only to rule out one or the other; whereas the foreign (even US and Germany-trained) will need to go through the elimination process logically and by the time they diagnose the treatment will be urgent and the condition of the patient, sometimes serious.

So, this doctor gets a lot of private e-mails from his peers, forwarding the test results, X-rays and other data and he has to just tell them what all can be the possible diseases. He does it as a service and is much known for this, it seems.

Dear Sangom ji,

I am not surprised with the fact that any doc can make a spot diagnosis...he doesn't have to be Indian trained.

Any experienced doc can do that.

Previously doctors were fast to make diagnosis cos no one sued them.

These days we have to have a current diagnosis in our mind.. a working diagnosis at the back of our mind and also playing defensive medicine to make sure we do not miss out anything and get sued.

Liability is high....so before a doctor gives a definite diagnosis he/she better be 100% sure.

Out here Dengue fever cases are high and if a patient dies of Dengue of fever and doc did not detect it, doctor can be jailed if proved that there was delay in diagnosis.

So I routinely do blood test for every patient having symptoms of fever and body pain on day 2 of fever cos I don't want anyone to drop dead or me landing in jail even though it might not seem like Dengue..better safe than sorry.

you are right Sir,
The hospital where my daughter works has many Indian Doctors; Indian doctors are able to adjust even in remote areas;
without Indian and Asian doctors, UK medical system might face acute shortage of doctors and whole National Health Service in UK might fall.

Dear TBS,

For me I am loyal to my country of birth..my ancestors had come to Malaysia no doubt but for me I love Malaysia and even if Singapore had roads paved with gold..I will never abandon Malaysia to hop over there.

Money isn't everything in life...if each citizen searches for greener pastures and abandons their country of birth, the nation will not prosper.

So I am happy to stay here and contribute to the growth of my nation.

My National Anthem is:

Negara Ku, Tanah Tumpahnya Darah Ku

Meaning: My country ..the land where my blood will spill for it till its last drops.

But surprisingly the composer of this song(Mohammad Iqbal) decided to hop over to Pakistan!LOL

Dear Doctor,

Sir Mohammed Iqbal (1877-1938) known as Allama Iqbal, was a great poet in Persian, Arabic and Urdu. He loved Persian and wrote many verses in that language. He is the "National Poet of Pakistan" and acclaimed as "Poet philosopher" of Pakistan. He was the person who put the idea for separate Muslim State in his presidential address in All India Muslim league Conference in December, 1930 held at Allahabad. His forefathers were Kashmiri Pundits of Sapru clan, about which he had mentioned in his writings.

Regards,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.
