Ukraine cries 'robbery' as Russia annexes Crimea

http://news.rediff.com/commentary/2...nexes-crimea/1846c5d384771cfb5b064550189703b0

Never mind what the West thinks -- the Kremlin says Ukraine's Crimea region is now part of Russia. A signing ceremony Tuesday between Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister of Crimea and the mayor of the city of Sevastopol made it official, the Kremlin said in a statement.

The territory, ceded to Ukraine in the Soviet era, is now part of the Russian Federation, it said. The annexation -- which had not been expected to occur until Russian lawmakers met later this week -- was met with a howl of protest in Kiev, where Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk called it "a robbery on an international scale."

Meanwhile, after masked gunmen killed a member of Ukraine's military, wounded another and placed the rest of the staff of a base in Crimea under arrest, the Defense Ministry authorized its forces in Crimea to use weapons "to protect and preserve the life of Ukrainian soldiers," according to a statement posted on its website.

Do we really understand the geo-politics?
For Instance The crimea situation is similar to German invasion of Poland in September 1939.
Or is it similar to the Soviet Union led Warsaw Pact troops invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.

Again is it like Pakistan occupying Kashmir in 1947 or like India helping liberate Bangladesh?

Sir,
Not similar. In MK, Hitler says he never really recognized Austria as a separate Nation since it was always German. Hence it was occupied first. The German invasion of Poland was in the bid to expand the German territory.

But this Cremea annexation is not deliberate , it was a result of Nato provocation. Imagine this scenario, if Ukraine joins the EU or NATO, the NATO fleet can come into teh Black Sea and point a gun at Russia s head. Now they are as far as Turkey. And Black Sea is the only accessible base for Russia throughout the year ( rest of the ports being North of Moscow or far right near Japan and of no use) . How can it afford to lose a strategic location as this to Nato?

People are comparing this to Kashmir and worried if Kashmir might vote and join PAK. Its laughable since PAK has no balls like RUS and India is no Ukraine to keep shut in case of such a scenario. Of course Russia is slightly abusing its power, but its purely defensive action, IMO.

The boundaries of nations always change. Kruschev gave Crimea to Ukraine, before that it was part of Russia. Tibet was independent, now part of China, may become independent again. The US took Texas and California from Mexico. There was no nation ever called Bangladesh before the 20th century. There are no unassailable facts, no right or wrong here.

politics of europe and russia is complicated. after the collapse of communist russia ,it has found it difficult to protect its interests. US and europe have tried hard to push the new countries free from russia into EU and nato orbit.russians ae getting pushed to the wall. the west have to recognise the legitimate security interests of russia. except economic sanctions, nothing much is likely to happen as far as crimea is concerned.or will it become another afganisthan and another misadventure for russians.?

Centralization and decentralization is a continuous phenomenon. How countries form, integrate and disintegrate is a fascinating subject.

if the language/religion is the reason to occupy/join with any nation.............then nepal should be with india....pak join with

afgan...here the theory of economy is more than culture/language....germans occupied....british colonised...these are

part of the history and every ocuupation paid the price for their occupation.....what next?,...who knows....hitler's move towards

france/then england ..reason for second world war....history repeats....
