Upanayanam

That's a nice question indeed,

Based on my readings of the dharmasasthra there is an order of relatives . The first preference is Father followed by Periappa , chittapa , Grandfather(Father's father) ..

Next yes , The brother of mother (Thai mama) can do the upanayanam. Being of different gothram is not a problem. It is permissible.

Thanks,
Arun M

If any sagotra relatives are available, then maternal uncle should not be permitted to do the upanayanam of nephew. This has been the practice. Even father's first cousins, second cousins, etc., can perform the Upanayanam.
