no body said good bye to 3 days marriage .the kalyana madapams are occupied by tourists even if there is no marriage. even small fuctions like seemanthams, upanayanams, birthdays are celebrated in halls.

Was the Brahmin community the main Target of mandapams? Mandapams are in the business of selling space. I do not think they care for caste, type of function, etc. As long as the money is good, they can care less for the type of business they attract.

Dear Mr.Ramacchandran,

i am surprised that living in chennai u r asking this question. None of the Mandapams are avaialble on the muhurtham days and even in Aadi month the mndapams are occupied for exhibitions etc. I booked a mandapam near Vadapalani (though i live in mylapore) for my daughters marriage on 31st may 2012 and the booking was done in november 2011, and that too paying the entire two days mandap charge in advance!!!

FYI a good marriage hall with carpark facility and in heart of city will be always booked either by the propective marriage party or by the cooking contractor who will say if he given the marrige contract he can get the mandap from the hall owner( since he has already booked that by paying a paltry amount!!) If you will enquire now you will not get any hall for the "THAI" month muhurthams, as they would have been already booked. No jokes.

Marriage hall is a big money spinning business ..for each every thing the brides father is fleeced and the cost will by not be less than 50% of the total marriage budget!!! And as Mr.Prasad points out " as long as the money is good they care less for the type of business they get!!

This is a big rocket going on in Chennai.. My friend was in search of a Mandapam for nearly three months and finally got one arranged by the caterer. The pity was he got the same Mandapam which was full when he made direct approach.. Some measures are needed to stop this menace...

Dear Renu,
Not calling! Only typing! :pound:

I always refer to him as GR when I talk!! :blah:

You know when I was in the government service once an older Indian nurse heard me talking on the phone with my husband..his name is Jayakumar(I call him Kumar).

Then after I ended the phone call the nurse asked me "doc who were you talking to on the phone?"

I said "my husband"

She was 'Aiyoo! Aiyoo you are calling him by name when talking..what has happened to Tamil Culture blah blah blah" and she went on and on and on.

The first few times I did not say anything to her but when she started saying the same thing each time I spoke to my husband on phone then I finally told her in Tamil "I am calling my husband only by name I am not calling your husband by his name..why are you getting so worked up ?"

After that she stopped bugging me.

Here is my City in USA we built a Temple with a hall. But we have some strict rules, like no meat no alcohol. Still you have to book six months in advance. We rent at very nominal rate for members.
Then some business people got together and built an Indian community center, they relaxed the strict rule, and charge 10 times our price and they are thriving, catering mostly to Indian Community. So much so that another center is being planned at a distance of 30 miles from this facility. If you try for weekend party dates, you will have to wait 6 months out.

I do not know what Mr. Ramacchandran is talking about.
