Dear all:

I am planning to visit chennai and madurai during summer.

I would appreciate if somebody could point me very important (and prestigious) temples or places to visit in and around chennai and madurai.

Although I wish to visit every other temple, but time and cost wise it may not be possible. Hence I am planning to stick to the major ones like meenakshi amman kovil in madurai etc.

Any help is much appreciated.

Since somebody has already given you details of major temples at Chennai/Madurai let me give info about lesser known but important temples.
Though Meenakshi temple is the most renowned temple,Madurai is a panchalinga kshetra with five Shiva temples for five elements like Prithvi,Appu,Teyu,Vaya and Akasha.

Meenakshi sundareshvara is Akasha kshetra
Vayu Kshetra-Mukthisvara temple near Mariamman teppakulam
Teyu-Then tiruAlavai temple in south Masi Street
Appu-Immayil Nanmai Tharuvaarkoil or Madyapurishvara temple
Appu Kshetra-Tiruaapudayaarkoil on the banks of Vaigai in Sellur.

Of these,Madyapurisvaratemple had been consecrated by LordSiva himself when he ruled over Madurai as Sundarapandiya as consort of SriMeenakshi following the tradition of Pandya rulers establishing a Siva Temple

kodi puniyam for sharing the information.

Can I request few more places?
Is it thanjavur and any other closer places to chennai and madurai worth visiting? I think if its a night's journey distance - I can withstand. With an 'americanized' little kid, travelling is bit difficult.

thank you,

drb

Chennai to Madura is overnight by train

Chennai to Thanjavur is also overnight by train

Distance between Madurai and Thanjavur is very short and could be covered in about 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Road will be more convenient for this distance.

All the best
