What is wrong with our education system?

Many of our civil engineers just out of their college can not design a bridge without making it an overkill. Mechanical engineers can not design a bolt and nut if you give them the parameters. It applies to every field of study. Why this pathetic situation? I give below a post I received in another forum. Take a look please. Do we have such teachers?

Dear Capable person,
Greetings,

Yes, I respect my Master for what he has given and in return he only got the satisfaction.

From A School Principal's speech at a graduation…

He said "Doctor wants his child to become a doctor…

Engineer wants his child to become engineer…

Businessman wants his ward to become CEO…

BUT a teacher also wants his child to become one of them..!!!!

Nobody wants to become a teacher BY CHOICE"

Very sad but that's the truth…!!!

The dinner guests were sitting around the table…

discussing life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued,

"What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?"

Teacher Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make?" (She paused for a second, then began...)

"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 min. without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental."

"You want to know what I make? (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table)

I make kids wonder.

I make them question.

I make them apologize and mean it.

I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.

I teach them how to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything.

I make them read, read, read.

I make them show all their work in math. They use their God given brain, not the man-made calculator.

I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know about English while preserving their unique cultural identity.

I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.

Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they
were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life."

(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)

"Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant. You want to know what I make?"

"I MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ALL YOUR LIVES, EDUCATING KIDS AND PREPARING THEM TO

BECOME CEO's, AND DOCTORS AND ENGINEERS…"

"What do you make Mr. CEO?"

His jaw dropped; he went silent.

Out here teachers do well.

They work only half a day..morning shift starts from 7.30am till 1.30pm.
Then they go home.

They have lots of school holidays.

They give tuition after work and earn lots of money(without paying income tax for the income earned thru tuition).

No doubt it is the always the average or below average students in school that becomes teachers even out here but who actually needs brains to do any work these days?

It all boils down to just having a functional brain and hard work and determination.

These days even dogs can drive..so what is so hard for anyone to do any work?

As long one is happy in his/her profession that should be fine.

But these days teachers are more interested in giving tuition at home and they tend to neglect their teaching in school.

They also are only interested to teach the bright students not too keen to take in weak students in their class cos they want to maintain their reputation that their tuition students produce good results.

Its as dumb as a doctor only treating the well and leaving the sick to die.
I do not see the logic in only coaching the bright students and neglecting the weaker students!

Anyway let's watch this dog drive!

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is a lone entry in the top 500 Universities around the World.

Academic Ranking of World Universities - 2012| Top 500 universities | Shanghai Ranking - 2012 | World University Ranking - 2012

In Life Science and Medicine none of the Indian University figure in the Top 200

QS World University Rankings - Topuniversities

Why Indian Universities are poorly Ranked?

Justifying the low Ranking of India Universities Dr. P Kaliraj, Vice Chancellor, Anna University said, “The present system through which these rankings are done are most suited to the western countries and US they give 25 per cent weight-age to noble laureates and 75 per cent to research while we focus on employability. Another major problem is related to funding as most of the funding by central government goes to IITs and IIMs or IISc and state universities get almost negligible amount of fund. They should consider different countries’ education system in mind before ranking the universities. The parameters used for ranking do not suit us thus our universities do not get place in the list of select top 200 universities.”

Where lies the root Cause of our Poor Educational System

Dr. N. Prabhudev, Former Vice Chancellor, Bangalore University said, “We can’t carry forward with the 19th century mindset, 20th century process and 21st century needs. With number of education bills stuck in Parliament, unions and people with vested interest block reforms in the country. We need to re-define the needs of students and teachers. Professors from outside are not called to teach and train. While the ones working in the country are not engaged in meaningful research, so it has become a chain where nobody wants to change. Selection of vice chancellors is more political than on merit. Governing bodies are in tune with the party in power - Left, Right or Centre.

Why no Indian Universities featured in the top 200 institutions globally | India Education Review

It seems there is a unanimous opinion among academicians that the primary reasons for underperformance of Indian institutions are lack of funding, lack of research, insufficient number of teachers.

The quality of higher education in India has deteriorated because of regional politics and linguistic chauvinism. Most of the students who enroll in colleges have poor academic background. They come from vernacular medium background and find it difficult to cope with higher studies where the medium of instruction is English. This results in huge communication gap between the teachers and the students. Third, the teachers in colleges and universities are appointed on parochial consideration and not on all-India merit basis. Consequently, incompetent teachers, with dubious academic record, manage to get appointed through corrupt practices. Fourth, there is mushrooming of substandard educational institutions with poor infrastructure, ineligible teachers and stifling environment not conducive for teaching and learning. Most of these institutions enjoy patronage and exist only to make money.
