What is wrong with the present educaton system?

Dear Sravna,

Let me answer just one portion where you mentioned that present education produces doctors which can empathize with human suffering.

I would like to just share what being a doctor is..I will be frank.

Ok the real reason I became a doctor cos I liked the subject....the human biology is fascinating and its God best creation that is mysterious and so many secrets to unravel.Any right thinking person will know that one can never be a saviour cos suffering/diseases/death is inevitable and a doctor can only somewhat treat a little.

People expect a doctor to be like Mother Theresa all sentimental and all..but I can tell you at least I am NOT sentimental.

The sight of a dead body on the table at day one of anatomy class did not make me feel any sympathy...all I wondered is "who is this person I am about to cut..who was he..what did he do for a living" Yes I respected him as my Guru cos I learned from his dead body but it stopped there.

The human skeleton which I had as a student..I did not bring him back to Msia with me..some of my friends brought back their skeletons but I did not cos I was not too sure what the persons last wish could have been ..in case he did not want to leave India???..so I did not bring him with me.

Now coming to empathy,..when a doctor sees a patient to a certain extent he has to be like Arjuna in a battlefield..that is..just do your duty without being too attached to the person your are treating.

If you let your guards down and empathize too much you can not treat the patient well cos sentiments will cloud your judgement.

So I know I am technical when I see my patients..I treat them the best I can..give them their money worth and no cheating anyone at the same time the patient should also be nice to me.

Doctors are humans too..there are days I might not really like seeing patients but still force myself to go to work..there are patients who I totally dislike seeing and wish they would just go to another doctor and there are patients who I am fond of too.

So if you ask me most people have a pre conceived notion that the perfect doctor should be a saint and full of compassion.

Being a doctor is a profession and it stops there..compassion is not a profession.

One need not be a saint or sinner in any profession..all one needs is just to do our duty right.

My consultants were always stressing on compassion but I knew deep down inside they were lying cos they were also technical themselves but some doctors love to paint an image as if they are saints and these are the types would stoop to the worst levels to gain fame and money.

Some of them are out in Private sector now and are not as ethical as they were preaching before.

We can not blame the education system for this..its just that desire and the lure of money can tempt people to adharmic means while putting on a fake cloak of compassion.

Dear Renuka,

Doing your duty right is the ideal but my point is the present education system does
not provide the basis for developing wisdom. This is my view is a serious flaw as intelligence without wisdom is very dangerous.

Wisdom develops only when one is first able to come out of selfish thinking. Too much emphasis on analytical skills does indeed make one view things in isolation.

Everyone is after money only. No service oriented profession is now there...Every profession has become a money making profession only

This I agree cos I do this all the time..when you are over analytical you are isolated but this is not a flaw..its an individual preference.

We can actually learn a lot when we analyze situations...some people think that those who analyze miss out the big picture but in my opinion some are just made to analyze and some just dont want to explore cos at the end of the day the big picture is actually a individual perception.

But I have to admit that these days teachers only want to teach good students and not take weak students in their class cos they want to have a good name by producing top scorers in their class but isnt a teacher supposed to make a weak student bright?

Its like a doctor who only wants to treat the healthy and not the sick..does not make sense right?

I will give you an example..my son takes piano lessons and his teacher is exam oriented and teaches him only exam pieces to score well during exam. She does not want to teach music for enjoyment and as hobby but solely to pass the exam.

So I removed him from sitting for exams and told her to teach him music for leisure..now since he is not going for exams the teacher is less worried about exams with him and she is teaching him all good piano songs and my son enjoys the lessons better.

This exam oriented scenario is partly becos the music school will not renew the teachers contract if he/she does not produce top scoring student for exam.

But when a person goes for music exams..all they learn that whole year is music pieces for exam that is just the same few songs over and over again..but when you dont go for exams you get to learn so many music pieces.

Even yesterday I was seeing a flyer advertising for mental mathematics that will make children calculate in 5 seconds!LOL

I was thinking what is the need to calculate at high speed..this adds to anxiety in children..a child should enjoy learning and develop his own pace in life.

I dont believe in pushing too much too soon..this spells disaster cos when a person reaches adulthood competitive thinking will become a way of life and this sort of individuals usually are ruthless in dealing with life as a whole.

Dear Sravna,

I understand were you are coming from...I can relate to Doctors who are unable to understand the pain and suffering of the patient and just go by the symptoms & underlying root causes..I always prefer a doctor who is good at his work and also empathise..

Our educational system in the name of logic and science has abandoned spiritual studies /moral classes

2 days back I read an article about creating living organism with alien DNA ie playing with the basic building blocks A, C, G. D and injecting chemically created nucleotides X-Y to it..What will be ramifications only God can tell!

We are trying to cultivate a scientific temper which is good but are we ready to create life?

Folks,

Here's an article I wrote that I have put up on my website. The link is:

Let me know your feedback
it is a very interesting post

we have passed thru this system stressing on anaysis and scientific methods of reasoning . perhaps we lacked in moral education
but we did fairly well in life and did not become thieves and dacoits

to develop wisdom , we require experience and as we pass thru life facing various moral dilemmas , choose to thebest of our ability and conscience .

but analysing a problem and finding a solution without getting personal emotion into it is best in most cases .we do not get into morality issues on a day to day basis . when we make borderline decisions , we have to consider which is the lesser evil .thats the practical way to look at life IMHO

as regards creating life , Hawkings has warned against playing with human reproduction and we may not know what we will end up with.

Unless we are spiritually knowledgeable and endowed we cannot affect the deeper reality. We will only be twisting the surface and reality will twist its way back. So we are likely to have unintended consequences in ventures such as creating life.
