Our scriptures, saints alike put forth devotional activities as a cleaning mechanism of the mind. They are often compared to the mirror with lot of dirt which makes us see the reflection clearly. When it is cleaned the images are clearly evident. Mind also is like this.

They further say that the dirts of the mind, which are called 'Arishtavargas',

Kama: Desire or lust

Krodha: Anger,

Lobha: Greed

Mada: Ego

Moha: Attachment

Matsarya: Jealousy

Alasya: Laziness

which make us not see clearly about jiva, fellow  living beings, jagat, the world around us and iswara, the god principle, who is the jagat karanam.
