Why Indians do not see India's growth?

‘Everywhere I went in India, I saw tremendous growth. It didn’t feel like a 5 per cent growth’

British High Commissioner to India Sir James Bevan speaks about the optimism he sees in India.

Sir James Bevan: I am an India optimist. I am a big believer in India’s future. The reason for that is that I spent two-and-a-half months travelling around this beautiful country before I took up my office as high commissioner. Everywhere I went, I saw tremendous growth. It doesn’t feel like 5 per cent growth out there in the real India; it feels bigger than that. It is my job as the new High Commissioner to strengthen the relationship between India and the UK.

There is a very positive growth in India in general. Last time when you started a thread, you focused on " why Indians hate India and other Indians" and focused Tamil Brahmin's attitude which attracted mixed reactions. But if the subject isdiscussed in general terms, yes, there is a a quite good growth in India. But the infrastructure has not grown to accomadate this kind of growth; in fact India lacks the basic requirements like clean water and clean air. i don't want to take this thread in that direction though.Kindly write more about the growth, please. it is nice to read about the growth.

India is growing.But politicians are standing in the way for selfish reasons There is one politician , only a regional satrap, was taking bribes for allowing multinationals to to start industries. In the long run, he started demanding parnership for his family members.The result! Projects went to other states. That is India. That is our growth.

Sorry folks I am going to be blunt on this issue.

what do you mean by growth ?. Hapazard development, concrete structures/houses/apartments/office complex that will fall & kill millions when a earthquake hits, floods, hapazard & unsafe dams, nuclear reactors in the middle of thick population centers, pollution, noise, corruption in govt & private sector, over 800 Mil (okay if you dispute this number, you can go with 300 or 400 or 500 or 600 Million people ..) in dire poverty.

Despite the fact the cause of urban growth is only due to the privatization unleashed by PV Narasimha Rao, we are not willing to private the rural sector under the pretext of protecting our poor farmers (already dying from poverty !!) from the rich bad enterprenuers & unleash the same level of growth for our poor rural citizens. Millions of rural folks are pouring into the cities & making it unliveable for everyone.. unprecented regulation is strangling the growth for rural economy, prices are controlled & dictated by the Govt, public distribution nonsense, etc....

Oh yeah, we all need to be proud of our Growth story (Indians are good in hype, exaggeration, drama...), except that it is only a story..

You are absolutely right... The economic policy adopted from NarasimaRao to Manmohan has resulted only rich becoming richer and poor becoming poorer.. Yes we have seen various models of cars...but what is the price of basic needs... The very agriculture sector is totally neglected ...Liberalisation has in brought in growth of every Indian but made to borrow more &more...

TVK - Sorry!!. what you are stating is incorrect. there is a very large middle class, who were poor earlier (200 to 300 Mil) that has benefited from these reforms. if you remember the only people who were the business class in the past was the marwari's & Gujaratis. Now the south indians are leading the businesses & starting IT firms, providing jobs for millions & making a lot of money.

unfortunately despite the fact that communism/socialism has never worked (China has moved to a capitalist economy though they have persisted with a communist government) lot of people keep parroting the same.

Amazing that people have forgotten that in the recent past people were fighting for reservations in Govt Jobs becos there was NO private sector. !!

I tend to disagree because the very middle class has fallen into 'Debt' trap... Our country economy is based on the agriculture... What is the the poor formers paying now for the sake of these upliftment of middle and upper middle classes.. You can see No. agri. lands are converted as plots by these Real estate sharks..Every former who should have been the back-bone of economy is not able find source for their day-today living... which results into migration to urban..The economy our country is slowly moving towards CREDIT based instead of SAVING based...which will bring only downfall..

It is true there more jobs created in IT sector..but it also brought in the IMBALANCE in earning environment... and leads to a society with unequal standard of living.. If private sector is the savior of our economy ..why this sector is not contributing much to the other fields..? except some places where their coffer will be filed..

It is not necessary one should be communist or socialist to see the reality... In China..the economy is in trouble and there are unrest everywhere ... Just because they opened their door for all the muliNatinal to invest.. it does not mean their economy has changed the life style for their citizens except pup&pop culture.. Still they work for more than 10 hrs a day and there is no relief / upliftment for the poor...

Reservations... ?? This will not change & yes.. still people are fighting for 50%..69% etc.etc... It is impossible for private sector to accommodate all the deserving because their main interest will be on the RETURN insted of commitment..

first we need to have a middle class to fall into any kind of trap. There was NO middle class for 40+ yrs till Narasimha Rao came & liberalized the economy. There was only rich class & rest are all poor in the socialist era !!.

so just because the IT sector has created a imbalance doesnt mean we abolish the IT sector & send everyone in the private sector also to the mercy of the Govt jobs !!.

Real estate sharks have nothing to do with the farmers losing out. Nobody is relocating to interior parts of rural lands becos there is NOTHING there !!. farmers are coming to cities in droves because the rural economy is DEAD because we have NOT liberalized that part of the economy !!

So we need to liberalize the rural economy to ensure the farmers also benefit rather than keep that part closed !

Yes growth is there. Growths of islands not properly interconnected and not inclusive. Again whatever is seen does not seem to be real because of our political character. We have grown so much to be BRIC nation but there are numerous villages who have no electricity, drinking water, proper medical care. If the haphazad growth is the yard stick to judge, we have done enormously well. But one thing is sure more and more urban-Indians are pledging themselves to the future. Indians, maybe a few, had their own wealth. But for getting instant pleasure and luxury, they are using somebody else's money or wealth. Of course this itself is a progress.

Perhaps we must also learn from the growth and decline of economies of greece, spain, portugal, italy etc. Our growth must not lead us in the same direction.

For every 100 rupees made by the middle class, fifty times that amount is made by the buider/politican brigade. The farmer community, especially small farmers have lost a lot - their lands taken away/ bought for a pittance.

It is your perspective.
If you are a person who sees the glass half full you are going to be always dissatisfied. If crying blues make you happy, I do not want to rain in your parade.
In nature everything has a positive side. Every cloud has a silver lining.
I suppose you have fallen in a cave in Afganistan, there may be no hope for you.
Religion is supposed to provide solace to the people who are hopeless, but some of the people in this site are even beyond that.

Mr.Bevan's observations are based upon tall buildings, night clubs, liquor bars and cabaret clubs.

Basic amenities like pure water, power and roads are lacking in the rural areas. He must have seen
the highways and toll booths. They have grown.

There are places where water for bathing and washing are not available. In the smaller towns and
villages , they have power supply for two hours, but in cities the power cut is for 2 hours. Now
in many industrial belts, there is total power shut down for HT users affecting production.

The poor is becoming poorer and the rich richer. He must have stayed at the houses of MLAs, MPs,
Ministers and Industrialists and might have seen their cozy living style.

Once a delegation of foreign economists and bankers came to India to assess the needs of our country.
They had a conference at Oberai and discussed about poverty eradication. The delegates stayed in
Oberai , Bombay and having seen the the tall buildings, high style of living, wasting food served on
the table, drinks etc, they concluded that India is a rich country and does not need any economic
assistance !

'Pranab Mukherjee won election as India's president, in a boost for the scandal-plagued ruling congress party' screech the Wall Street Journal. although this may not be India's voice, the fact remains. yes, comparing to what we were in 1947, we are better off. but if you go interior of Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh etc people there may not even know that India has obtained independence. curruption is at the peak. politicians loot the country and getting away. we as middle class (rather I should say we are above middleclass) are certainly better off. you try to bribe any policeman in USA!! in India, you can get away with any crime. you see unless bulk of people get benefitted, growth will not be feasible.

Yes there is progress, no one is contradicting that, but the cost we are paying for that is enormous. One basic disadvantage that we have here in India is that no one takes responsibilty for anything that is happening around us. The learned and the educated never come forward to show the correct way. Corrupt politicians jump to every chance of taking responsibility and thats why we have huge crore of scams every other day. While we re talking of water shortage there is a big leakage on the main throughfare RK Mutt road, near Mylapore bus stand. A big carter has formed in the last three days as every bus car had to travel over the water leakage. I personally complained four time in the last two days and till now nothing has happened. The lack of acknowledgement, why should i do it? attitude really makes us feel whether there is any progress?
Yes the progress of huge highways connecting Kashmir to Kanya kumari has given us fast roads so that the big sedans can fly thru. But the cost to the poor is everyday accidents as no one takes responsibility or care for others life. Chennai to trichy highway once lined with huge trees is barren on both the sides. Progress at what price? Certainly No Cheers!!!

India has grown but as a country we want growth without responsibility...Freedom without accountability...We want Government to help us but we do not help the Government...Our rules are lax and tax offenders get away with no or minimum punishment

Have you heard about the Broken Window theory...This was first propounded by social scientists James Q Wilson and George C Kelling in 1982....Let us take a building where a glass window is broken...In case no on fixes it some one peeps inside and finds that it is unoccupied...Soon vandals try to break more windows and then troop inside...it becomes a den for criminals and other squatters...On the other hand if action had been taken to fix the first window that was broken it would not have turned into a den of vice

You would have noticed the same phenomonon in urban India...Someone throws litter in a vacant plot...Soon we have others following it & mountain of trash gets accumulated in the plot...Had the first incident been acted upon the downward spiral would not have started...Our laxity (Chalta hai) attitude is the bane of the country...We require a zero tolerance for indiscipline...This no non sense approach is required for following the rules of the land


In India we need to enforce discipline...Let us start with one focus area...Once we instil this attitude in the minds of our citizens then our country will go a long way and there would be no going back.

The economic liberalization in the early 1990's led to the growth of service sector in a big way...Our private sector is the back bone of the country..Let us strive to develop the individual enterprise to hoary heights through a thriving private sector....Let the public sector be restricted only to the essential services.


We had a comment about trees getting cut as a result of roads being built...Alas our infrastructure be it roads, ports still require more than USD 1 trillion of investment in the next 10 years...We require responsive private sector that does not degrade the environment while planning and executing mega investments...We require more trees to be planted to save the environment...Can we take a leaf out of the efforts of Neyveli Lignite Corporation which has planed 17 Million trees in an area of 2750 hectares as an aforestation drive...We require more such ecological conservation initaives along with growth in infrastructure

We, Indians, are a diverse lot speaking many different languages, following different faiths, having a lot of differences in educational attainments, employment opportunities, cultural growth and the state of development -- urbanization and industrialization -- region-wise! One may say that it is difficult to speak of the country as a whole when it comes to the essential features of growth as the same is uneven and haphazard as someone has already observed! Still the people here like life as it is lived here in spite of the slow rate of growth of the economy or the lack of any growth in some places! Not more than a small percentage of population is going mad or killing themselves or others or migrating to better pastures merely because of economic hardships! We live with all the askew development, corruption in a small way or in enormous proportion in the high places and the uneven flow of rewards for good conduct and punishments meted out for wrongful conduct! We can perhaps attribute this resilience to centuries of oppression through foreign domination and survival against very high odds! It is in the culture!
