Why the focus on Rapes in India by World Media

True..We have been getting lots of negative publicity about the rapes in the country...How the World media has vociferously tried to blame the Hindu culture for this... A completely different opinion on this

While there are always (often incorrect) reports in world media about India's male dominated society, poverty and feudal traditions there was an overall belief in the world that Hindus are by and large non-violent people. People are surprised if there are reports of major acts of violence committed by Indians in any community (which by the way are taken for granted in Islamic countries).

Against the backdrop of a supposedly a non-violent society the reports of violent rape of Nirbhaya has changed the face of the country. In addition there are reports of tourist women being harassed by local urchins and horny males with cops doing nothing. India leads in the acts of corruption and so any possibility of seeking justice is ruled out in the minds of many. Therefore this sea change is news worthy and broadcast-ed by news organization seeking to sensationalize news.

There are also many cases of mass sex trafficking and sex slavery in India reported by many organizations working to stop such crimes.

Indian tourism and revenue will be hurt for no good cause due to misinformation. I hope Indian government takes active steps to reverse this image by having a no tolerance policy.

PS: There are some that say the so called minor who did the most hurt in the rape case of Nirbhaya had a Islamic name which is why his identity was protected to prevent more communal violence. Not sure how far this report is true

there has been a spurt in cases of rape and violence against women. perhaps they are getting reported more by the media. also more women are reporting these cases which they were not earlier. recent violence against people from north east is the latest. delhi is fast becoming a violent city. spotlight is on the police . their every action is under scrutiny. There is a crying need for police reforms for delhi to become safer for women and others

If no names are mentioned one can be pretty sure that they belong to a specific minority community. The juvenile in the nirbhaya case is a muslim. The two involved in the beating of the north east student in delhi also are from the minority community. The student died the next day with internal injuries.

WASHINGTON: Nearly 22 million women — about one in five— have been raped in their lifetime in the US, with nearly half of the victims subjected to sexual assault before the age of 18, according to a report by the White House.
Though women of all the races have been targeted, however, women beolonging to some races are more vulnerable than the others, the report added.
Nearly 22 million American women and 1.6 million men have been raped in their lifetime, it said.

according to reports ,domestic violence and molesting in households constitute 60percent of crimes against women in india. rapes though getting highlighted constitute only 16percent. not to say that they should be condoned. put your house in order first and save your women and young girls from husband,inlaws and relations ,domestics before public outcry against rape

The comparison is always with Delhi because it happens to be the National Capital...Every thing that happens there is seen with a lens by rest of the country men..

Now I am going to share a different perspective about being in Delhi

Those of us who stay in the National Capital Region (including me) there is a halo around us, which you can rightly capitalize when you visit other parts of the country, in case you wish to!

You will be introduced as a Delhi wallah...

In Chennai when you tell shop keepers that you are from Delhi then there is an automatic respect as it is viewed closer to the power center!

When Ram and I had to attend a wedding in Delhi last year, many of my friends advised me not to go alone outside and never to

wander after 6 pm, even escorted by Ram! We were given a nice room in guest house of Panicker travels and had a comfortable

stay. It is scary to think of Delhi from a distance, though! :sad:

Generally so many people select news items and publish it --like this one hindus only are not rapists but males are rapists irrespective of their religion or caste, but who lose their balance due to drinks or undue persuation by their counterpart(either inentionaly or not) become culprits.

The Lancet report is an eye opener..56 countyries were studied for sex assaults on women..The rapes are the least in India & Bangladesh compared with North America, New Zealand, Africa or even the Middle East..This report has been released today a short while ago

There was another report from UK that girls cannot complain of rape if both are inebriated. This was in relation to campus gangs and party goers.

there is no need to be scary about delhi. as I have posted earlier more ladies are victim of domestic violence and molesting by near relations. rapes getting reported are not regular incidents once in a month or so. at best some may pass some comments in a language you may not understand anyway and some may try chain snatching as generally it is felt south indian ladies wear gold chains and earrings.

all these media reports are overdone. it was the rape season for channels. now they have switched over to racial attacks on north east and foreigners. sometime back it was blindings of convicts in prisons . topics change regularly and a new sensational news comes and dominates the headlines.all this is to be taken with a pinch of salt. best act normal and continue your life. after nirbhaya case lot of parents were worried about their girl child in school ,colleges and workplace. even my seventy year old maid felt she was being followed by a boy of twenty who ran upto her and told her she should not worry about him as he was scared she will report him to police as he happened to be walking behind her on a lonely road. delhi that way is a dicey place
