World No Tobacco Day,31 May,

31 May, WHO and partners mark World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Tobacco kills nearly six million people each year, of which more than 600 000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke. For World No Tobacco Day 2014, we are calling on countries to raise taxes on tobacco.

WHO | World No Tobacco Day

you know Pj sir . I gave up smoking after retirement since I could not enjoy a peaceful smoke in my neighbourhood cities have become smoker unfriendly. I could not tolerate unsolicited advise from strangers to kick the habit. one lady even advised my wife to stop ill treating me since she thought I was smoking due to that.lol

May 31st World No to Tobacco Day.

Ha Ha Ha..seen this all the while...just for one day people try to quit and June 1st its
World back to Tobacco day and people smoke more the next day to make up for the lost quota on May 31st.

These days I dont bother to advise anyone to quit smoking cos no one listens.. those who ask me "doctor how can I quit smoking"..only to such a person I will explain to them steps to quit..the rest can huff and puff and smoke themselves down!LOL

What is worrying is ‘Second-hand smoking’. Non-smokers paying penalty for the act of smokers who are addicted to this habit allegedly to get away from stress and pressure and for other reasons.

People have been smoking for ages, without such catastrophic ill effects.

Adulteration, purification, and additives cause more problems than the raw one . Applicable to all products - sugar, alcohol, drugs (hallucinating or otherwise).

Education, moderation, family and society pressure are preferable to banning.

The only way to give up smoking is WILL POWER!

When I was in the government service I used to run a weekly quit smoking clinic and give nicotine patches/chewing gum to patients for free and also give them advice to quit smoking.

I had undergone special training to handle the quit smoking clinic and believe me with all the various methods prescribe nicotine patches and time taking advise etc only those who had Will Power could quit.

I used to train the smokers who had strong will power to train themselves by telling NO and stand the cold turkey side effects and go thru the "suffering"....I still remember one man who was a chain smoker for many years smoking almost 30 cigg a day quit in a week.

All those who did not have will power could never quit at all.

So take home point is :If you have Will Power nothing is impossible"

Smoking is still an addictive habit..so whether we get side effects or not its not advisable to be using substances that make us dependent on them.

BTW I note that many people cant start their day without a cup of coffee..till they get the coffee fix they would be like zombies!

A healthy state would be that we are alert upon waking without the need of coffee or any other stimulant.
