Govt.’s role in tobacco control under focus

The government’s role in tobacco control came up for discussion, on the eve of World No Tobacco Day, in a centre in the city that has been at the forefront of fighting the battle against tobacco.

V. Shanta, chairperson of Adyar Cancer Institute, spoke about the government’s contradictory approach when it comes to tobacco control.

“On the one hand, though the Health Department has a national tobacco control programme, on the other, under the trade and commerce ministry, tobacco is being promoted. This creates a contradiction in government policies, which is a major deterrent to tobacco control,” she said.

She was speaking at a workshop at Cancer Institute, on Saturday to sensitise members of the Tamil Nadu Trade Union Associations.
T. Vellaiyan, president, Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai, emphasised a threefold approach that needs to be adopted to reduce the consumption of tobacco.

He said, “While traders provide consumers with what they need, they should learn that only healthy products should be provided to consumers. Consumers, on the other hand should quit using tobacco, and the government should enforce the Act effectively.”
