Young Indian diplomat Eenam Gambhir delivered a stinging response on Friday after Pakistan Prime Minster urged the United Nations to appoint a special envoy for Jammu and Kashmir.
India said Pakistan had become ‘Terroristan’ -- “the land of pure terror”.
This is not the first time India has chosen Gambhir from its permanent mission to the UN to deliver its response to a Pakistan PM.
Exactly a year ago, Gambhir delivered India’s response at the United Nations General Assembly to then Pakistan premier Nawaz Sharif after he raked up the Kashmir issue.
Gambhir, the first secretary at the permanent mission who delivered the riposte when India exercised its “right of reply”, is no stranger to Pakistan. Before being posted to New York, she served on the Pakistan desk at the external affairs ministry.
Addressing the United Nations general assembly president on Friday, India said: “In its short history, Pakistan has become a geography synonymous with terror. The quest for a land of pure (“Pak” is Urdu for pure) has actually produced the land of pure terror. Pakistan is now Terroristan.”
In 2016, Gambhir’s statement started off by describing Sharif’s speech as a “long tirade” about the situation in Kashmir and called Pakistan a “terrorist state”. It also set the stage for a speech by external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.
