Young stalkers using Swathi’s murder to threaten women: Are we failing as a societ
The immediate response to sexual assault is an outrage oriented towards and limited to punishment, without exploring 'why'.
When murder accused Ramkumar was arrested, nobody could have known that other men would actually threaten women with what he did to Swathi.
In two separate incidents in Chennai, two young men (one a minor) have threatened to kill women they were stalking the way Ramkumar allegedly killed
Swathi if the women failed to reciprocate their feelings. They have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
While it is shocking that men have used to the case to threaten other women, Chennai-based psychiatrist Dr Jayanthini says that it is quite common for people to try to capitalize on the fear generated in the aftermath of sensational cases.
